ST. LOUIS (AP) ? After months of drought, companies that ship grain and other goods down the Mississippi River are being haunted by a potential nightmare: If water levels fall too low, the nation's main inland waterway could become impassable to barges just as the harvest heads to market.

Any closure of the river would upend the transport system that has carried American grain since before steamboats and Mark Twain. So shipping companies are scrambling to find alternative ways to move tons of corn, wheat and other crops to the Gulf Coast for shipment overseas.

"You can't just wait until it shuts down and suddenly say, 'There's a problem,'" said Rick Calhoun, head of marine operations for Chicago-based Cargill Inc. "We're always looking at Plan B."

The mighty Mississippi is approaching the point where it may become too shallow for barges that carry food, fuel and other commodities. If the river is closed for a lengthy period, experts say, economic losses could climb into the billions of dollars.

It isn't just the shipping and grain industries that will feel the pinch. Grocery prices and utility bills could rise. And deliveries of everything from road-clearing rock salt for winter and fertilizer for the spring planting season could be late and in short supply.

"The longer it lasts, the worse it gets," said Don Sweeney, associate director of the Center for Transportation Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. "It's inevitable that it will mean higher prices down the road."

The focus of greatest concern is a 180-mile stretch of the river between the confluences of the Missouri River near St. Louis and the Ohio River at Cairo, Ill. That's where lack of rain has squeezed the channel from its normal width of 1,000 feet or more to just a few hundred feet.

The river depth is 15 to 20 feet less than normal, now about 13 feet deep in many places. If it dips to around 9 feet, rock pinnacles at two locations make it difficult, if not impossible, for barges to pass. Hydrologists for the National Weather Service predict the Mississippi will reach the 9-foot mark by Dec. 9.

The situation worsened last week when the Army Corps of Engineers began reducing the outflow from an upper Missouri River dam in South Dakota, where a group of experts said Thursday that the worst U.S. drought in decades had intensified over the last week.

The flow is gradually being cut by more than two-thirds by Dec. 11 as part of an effort to ease the effects of the drought in the northern Missouri River basin.

Lawmakers from Mississippi River states are frustrated with the corps' action and even requested a presidential emergency declaration to overturn it. So far, the White House has not responded.

On Thursday, Army Assistant Secretary Jo-Ellen Darcy told Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois and some of his colleagues from Iowa and Minnesota that the corps would consider cutting the amount of water held back from the Mississippi.

Darcy also pledged to expedite removal of rock formations south of St. Louis, though that work would take at least two months after a contractor is hired.

To Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat, the stakes couldn't be higher.

"There is going to be a dramatic ripple effect to our economy if the barge traffic grinds to halt, which clearly it will if something is not done to avert this crisis," she said.

Her Missouri colleague in the Senate, Republican Roy Blunt, acknowledged "friction" between upper Missouri River interests that control the flow and those downstream on the lower Missouri and Mississippi rivers. He said the corps "needs to manage that balance."

Over the years, parts of the river have occasionally been closed because of low water, barge accidents, dredging, ice and flooding. But this shutdown, if it happens, would affect a pivotal stretch that is used for heavy two-way traffic ? shipments going south to the Gulf as well as transports from the Illinois and Ohio rivers headed north to Chicago and Minneapolis.

A two-month shutdown ? the length of time that some observers fear given current conditions ? would have an estimated impact of $7 billion, according to the river industry trade group American Waterways Operators.

Consider agricultural products. It costs 30 to 35 cents more per bushel to send grain to the Gulf by rail instead of barge ? a massive figure when calculating the millions of bushels shipped downriver.

"When you think of all we buy at the grocery store that has grain and corn, consumers could really see it hit them in the pocketbooks," said Ann McCulloch of the Waterways Operators group.

The Coast Guard controls navigation on the river and decides when to require restrictions or shut it down.

"It's really played by ear," Coast Guard Lt. Colin Fogarty said. "The Mississippi River is a dynamic environment."

River shippers are bracing for the worst, weighing train and truck alternatives to move a staggering volume of cargo, if necessary.

Seven million tons of farm products are shipped via barge in a typical December-January period, along with 3.8 million tons of coal, 1.7 million tons of chemical products, 1.3 million tons of petroleum products and 700,000 tons of crude oil, McCulloch said.

Trains already haul a vast volume of material, but switching from river to rail isn't that easy, especially on short notice. Cargill, for example, uses 1,300 of its own barges on inland waterways. Finding that much capacity elsewhere is no simple task.

"We'll look for other sources of transportation to the extent we can. But if you take away this important artery, you can't just snap your fingers and replace it with trains," Calhoun said. "There aren't just trains sitting around. They're already pretty busy with their business on their books."

Tractor-trailers can pick up some of the slack. But some cargo, such as coal, just isn't cost-effective to haul by truck over long distances, said Bob Costello, an economist with the American Trucking Associations.

Businesses operating directly on the river are bound to suffer, too.

George Foster founded JB Marine Service Inc. in St. Louis 36 years ago to make a living fixing and cleaning barges. An extended river closure may force layoffs, he said. He figures many other companies will be forced to cut jobs, too.

"It's extremely dire," Foster said. "There's no way to sugarcoat it."

Berrigan

On the same day that former Saints assistant Mike Cerullo testified in the bounty appeal hearing convened by former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, Judge Helen Berrigan issued a reminder that she has ultimate jurisdiction over the process.

And she hinted that she?s leaning against the league?s position.

Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune has obtained an order entered by Judge Berrigan on Thursday.? Here?s the full text of it:? ?In light of the CBA Appeal Panel?s Decision of September 7, 2012, that ?pay for performance? discipline was within the exclusive jurisdiction of the Systems Arbitrator, anticipating that the forthcoming decision by Mr. Tagliabue may be subject to an expedited review as to its fundamental fairness, and assuming as undisputed the testimony by the New Orleans Saints players and coaches that only ?legal hits? were used to intimidate and/or injure opposing players, the parties shall brief the following: 1. Does Articles 43 and 46 of the CBA exclude discipline by the Commissioner for ?legal? contact? 2. Does the CBA give the players and coaches adequate notice as to what conduct could be sanctioned as ?conduct detrimental?? In other words, is that portion of the CBA ambiguous, hence unenforceable? Counsel should discuss the significance, if any, of the separate provision for sanctions upon players for ?unnecessary roughness or unsportsmanlike conduct on the playing field with respect to an opposing player? in Article 46, Section 1(b) from ?[a]ll disputes involving a fine or suspension imposed upon a player for conduct on the playing field? and ?conduct detrimental? in Section 1(a). Reference to relevant NFL rules defining ?legal? and ?illegal? contact is welcomed, as well as a discussion of examples of ?conduct detrimental? provided in the CBA and related documents.?

In English, Judge Berrigan wants the parties to submit written documents that address specific angles and issues that may be relevant to her decision about the imposition of punishment on players for a pay-for-performance system based on clean, legal hits that kept opponents from continuing in a given game.? The way the questions are written suggests that she has identified specific problems that the NFL may have under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

For example, Judge Berrigan wants the parties to address whether discipline for ?legal? on-field contact is prevented because she apparently thinks it may be.? Likewise, she wants to know whether the CBA gives players and coaches ?adequate notice? regarding the conduct that could be regarded as ?conduct detrimental? because she thinks it may not.

Judge Berrigan also seems to think that the punishment for clean, legal hits falls under the portion of the CBA that gives Ted Cottrell or Art Shell exclusive jurisdiction over the disciplinary process ? an argument that the NFL surely will argue the players have waived by not raising it under the CBA.

Regardless of the arguments raised by the parties, the order seems to be good news for the players, and bad news for the NFL.? The fact that it was issued at a time when key witnesses in the case against the players are testifying could rattle the league?s lawyers and create a sense that, no matter what happens before Tagliabue, the suspensions will ultimately be thrown out.

New BoE chief will face slow recovery - King

LONDON (Reuters) - The Bank of England's outgoing governor Mervyn King underlined on Tuesday the uphill task his successor faces, saying the bank might have to buy even more government bonds to help drag Britain's economy back to health.

Chancellor George Osborne delivered a shock on Monday by appointing Canada's central bank head Mark Carney to be the first non-Briton to head the Bank, just over a week before he lays out the government's latest budget plans.

The euro zone debt crisis, high inflation and fiscal austerity have weighed heavily on economic recovery, which in turn has undermined the Conservative-led government's efforts to pay off the costs of the 2008 financial crisis.

While official numbers on Tuesday confirmed the UK economy grew 1 percent in the third quarter, King said his regime at the central bank should probably have made clear earlier that a substantial recovery would not come in 2013 and 2014.

"It may be unreasonable to expect anything other than a slow and protracted recovery, absent a further fall in the real exchange rate," King told a parliamentary committee.

"In such an environment, there are limits to the ability of domestic policy to stimulate private sector demand as the economy adjusts to a new equilibrium," he said.

"In the event that further easing is required, I believe it appropriate to continue with our policy of purchasing gilts."

Paul Fisher, a BoE policymaker speaking alongside King, said Britain's economy may well need more monetary easing next year.

Two other policymakers, Ben Broadbent and Martin Weale, said they might have backed more asset purchases in November had it not been for high inflation and a BoE transfer of money to the government that will provide about 35 billion pounds' stimulus.

Tuesday's official figures confirmed the country had exited recession. But the expansion was flattered by spending at the London Olympics and a rebound from the preceding quarter, when an extra public holiday dented output.

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development struck a more pessimistic note, predicting on Tuesday that Britain's economy would shrink 0.1 percent this year and grow just 0.9 percent in 2013 - much weaker than its May forecast of 1.9 percent growth next year.

Economists said Carney, whose appointment was welcomed by financial markets on Monday, was likely to face an economy still struggling to return to solid growth when he takes over in July.

"I am completely confident with Mark Carney as someone with whom the Bank is in very good hands - as indeed is the role of governor which I am sure he will carry out with very great distinction," King said.

TROUBLE AHEAD

The downbeat growth predictions will raise the pressure on Osborne to come up with measures to boost the economy when he delivers his half-yearly budget statement next week.

Business surveys have painted a gloomy picture of the fourth quarter, and retail sales - a gauge of vital consumer spending - posted a surprise drop in October.

"The good news from the third quarter is unlikely to last," said Rob Wood, economist at Berenberg Bank. "With the one-off boost from the Olympics unwinding in the fourth quarter and business surveys downbeat, a return to contraction is likely."

Compared to a year ago, GDP was 0.1 percent lower, slightly worse than first thought, the Office for National Statistics said.

Consumer spending rose 0.6 percent on the quarter, the biggest increase in more than two years, driven by spending on recreation and culture, including tickets for the London Olympics and Paralympics which took place in the summer.

Britain's net trade position improved, with exports rising 1.7 percent on the quarter - partly due to spending by tourists - and imports dipping 0.4 percent, the ONS said.

Output in Britain's services sector, which makes up more than three quarters of GDP, rose by 1.3 percent in the third quarter - the largest increase in five years. It fell 0.1 percent in the second quarter.

Industrial output was 0.9 percent higher, while construction contracted by 2.6 percent.

Britain has not fully recovered the output lost in the wake of the financial crisis, while the euro zone's debt problems, government austerity to reduce the budget deficit and banks' reluctance to lend are holding back economic growth.

Case Against Ex-NFL Player Dismissed

An Orange County Superior Court judge on Wednesday dismissed a misdemeanor child-annoyance case against a retired Santa Ana high school teacher and NFL running back who was accused of hugging and kissing a former?student at school.

Joseph Manuel Orduna of Irvine, a former Godinez Fundamental High School biology teacher and wrestling coach, shed tears when Judge William Evans issued the ruling in Santa Ana and was "ecstatic" afterward, defense attorney David Cohn said.

"He broke down, tears, just shaking his head in his hands," Cohn said.
"You could see the tears streaming down his face as the judge granted the motion."

Deputy District Attorney Bryan Clavecilla, who could not be immediately
reached for comment, had argued for another trial.

Evans' dismissal came two days after jurors deadlocked 8-4 in favor of
acquittal, forcing a mistrial. The judge said he did not believe another trial would lead to a guilty verdict, Cohn said.

"At the very best, it would be hung again," Cohn said, noting that an
expert testified during the trial that Orduna was not interested in underage sex.

Orduna?was accused of kissing a 16-year-old student on the
lips while hugging her in the hallway near his classroom in June 2011.

Further investigation led police to another girl, then 16, who contended that Orduna grabbed her buttocks while hugging her, but the misdemeanor child-?annoyance charge related to that allegation was dismissed Nov. 14 before trial because she is in the Navy and was unavailable to testify.

A third student testified that the defendant touched her inappropriately when he was a middle school teacher in 2006 or 2007, though Orduna was never charged in connection with that alleged incident.

The alleged victim of the remaining charge on which jurors deadlocked
had Orduna as her teacher when she was a sophomore, according to Clavecilla, who told the panel that the alleged crime occurred near the end of her junior year.

"When Mr. Orduna was her teacher, she liked Mr. Orduna," Clavecilla
said. "She saw him as a mentor, as a father figure."

Orduna and the students would often hug, and it "started out innocently," Clavecilla said, but the teacher's "hugs started to get longer, started to get more uncomfortable."

The girl began to "go out of her way to avoid him," but on the day of
the alleged crime, he got her attention outside class in a hallway, the
prosecutor said.

"They gave each other a hug," he said, adding that when she tried to
pull away, "he grabbed her chin and tried to kiss her on the lips ... and he did kiss her lips, and she was offended."

When the girl later confided in an after-school counselor about the
alleged kiss, she was "distraught, crying," Clavecilla said.

Orduna told a Santa Ana school resource officer that the girl initiated
the hug and that he "pecked her on the lips as a reflex because she was close to his face,'' Clavecilla told the jury.

Clavecilla also alleged that while Orduna was the girl's teacher, he
would "talk in graphic detail about his sex life" during class.
Cohn told jurors Orduna was a "hugging" type of teacher.

Orduna, who taught sex education at the school, received a letter from
the 16-year-old girl in her junior year saying how "he's had a huge impact on her," Cohn said, adding that she referred to Orduna's hugs as "warm and safe."

In his sex-education classes, Orduna encouraged his students to abstain
from sex before marriage, Cohn said.

When the girl's allegation came to light, the school's principal
investigated but accepted Orduna's explanation that "their lips touched
unintentionally, completely inadvertently, and that he wished it never
happened," Cohn said.

The principal concluded that the girl was "embarrassed" that the incident
happened in front of other students, according to the attorney.

Orduna was a running back with the New York Giants and Baltimore Colts
from 1972-74 and scored a touchdown for Nebraska in the 1971 Orange Bowl victory that gave the Cornhuskers a share of the 1970 national championship.

Sieve holds nanoparticles and acts as solar absorber

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? A membrane consisting of polymer fibres and proteins makes a novel filter for tiny, nano-scaled particles in aqueous solutions. The result of this research, which was done by Professor Mady Elbahri and his team from the Institute of Material Science at Kiel University (KU) and the Institute of Polymer Research at Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG), has recently been published as the cover article in the current issue of Advanced Functional Materials.

A nanofluid, which means a colloidal suspension of e.g. metal nanoparticles in water, passes easily through commonly used macroporous polymeric membranes. The particles are too small to be held using hole diameters between three and four micrometers. In addition, the particles would block smaller sieve openings rapidly. Hence, pressure would be necessary to filter out the fluid.

In order to solve these problems, Elbahri and his team biofunctionalized their membrane and added a commercially available protein to the fibres. "We found out that the protein undergoes a conformational change under water, and its ability to capture all the metal nanoparticles during the filtration process is activated," explains Elbahri. "This is a breakthrough," adds Co-author Dr. Shahin Homaeigohar. "The same principle will hopefully enable us, to filter biomolecules and organisms out of waste water."

From Filtration to solar thermal energy

When the nano sieve captures metal particles such as gold, another application is at hand, because, no other method has succeeded in dispersing the particles that well. "This result was unexpected," says Elbahri. "Under dry conditions, the membrane shows the color of the metal, in this case the red of the gold nanoparticles." When the membrane gets wet, it becomes black. "Then, it acts as an omnidirectional perfect black absorber, which can be used as a solar absorber." Elbahri adds: "Indeed we bridge the gaps between several disciplines, chemistry, physics, bioscience and materials science that is, and the Nanochemistry and Nanoengineering group has now initiated the first step toward intradisciplinarity of Nanoscience."

Application as a virus and bio-filter

The nano sieve will allow filtering very small particles or biomolecules and organisms such as viruses out of water. The scientists involved have already patented their innovation, a bio-nano-composite, in Europe. Another patent for the USA is . Besides its application in water filtration, the nano sieve shows great potentials as solar absorber and as a catalyser. "All in all, the result is a breakthrough towards the design of an operative filtration process, as a new route for the fabrication of functional materials, and offers commercially attractive efficiencies at a low cost," says Elbahri.

(AP) ? Federal mediators are entering the stalled NHL labor talks, with the season's first 2? months already lost because of the lockout.

George Cohen, director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, said Monday the parties had agreed to use the agency. He assigned three mediators to assist negotiations ? deputy director Scot Beckenbaugh, director of mediation services John Sweeney and Commissioner Guy Serota ? who was removed later in the day because of a Twitter account that may have been tampered with.

The sides are to meet separately with the mediators Wednesday.

"While we have no particular level of expectation going into this process, we welcome a new approach in trying to reach a resolution of the ongoing labor dispute at the earliest possible date," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said.

Cohen has worked with the players' associations for Major League Baseball, helping end the 1994-95 strike as an outside counsel, and the NBA. He was an adviser to the NHL players' union before joining FMCS three years ago.

"We look forward to their involvement as we continue working to reach an equitable agreement for both the players and the owners," said Donald Fehr, executive director of the NHL Players' Association.

Cohen mediated during the 2010 negotiations in Major League Soccer and 2011 talks in the NFL and NBA, along with this year's dispute between the NFL and its on-field officials.

Cohen said Serota was removed because "within one hour after I issued a press release ... it has been called to my attention that there are issues involving an allegedly hacked Twitter account associated with Commissioner Guy Serota." He said Serota was removed "to immediately dispel any cloud on the mediation process, and without regard to the merits of the allegations."

Hockey players and management have not negotiated since last Wednesday. The NHL has canceled more than one-third of its regular season, including all games through Dec. 14, the New Year's Day outdoor Winter Classic and the All-Star weekend scheduled for Jan. 26-27 at Columbus, Ohio.

"I have had separate, informal discussions with the key representatives of the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association during the course of their negotiations for a successor collective bargaining agreement," Cohen said in a statement.

"Due to the extreme sensitivity of these negotiations and consistent with the FMCS's longstanding practice, the agency will refrain from any public comment concerning the future schedule and/or the status of the negotiations until further notice."

Beckenbaugh was a mediator during the 2004-05 lockout, a stoppage that caused cancellation of the entire season.

Broadway box offices rejoice this Thanksgiving

NEW YORK (AP) ? Most Broadway shows had a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving ? box offices jumped more than $6 million from the previous week and several records were broken.

The Broadway League, the national trade association for the Broadway industry, released data Monday that showed most shows roared back from a post-Superstorm Sandy listlessness, pulling in $27,019,880 for the week ending Sunday, far better than the $20,881,272 earned during the seven-day period before.

The perennial No. 1 show, "Wicked," was the biggest winner, generating the highest eight-performance week in Broadway history. It saw its gross rise $692,343 to finish the week at $2,290,819.

"Annie" set a house record at the Palace Theatre, grossing $1,499,197 and slipping past the old record held by the revival of "West Side Story" set in January 2010.

"The Book of Mormon" continued to top itself, earning a whopping $1,801,627 for the week, the 42nd time it has broken its own house record at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.

Disney also had reason to cheer. Its "Newsies" broke the record at the Nederlander Theatre with $1,106,383 and "The Lion King," which just celebrated its 15th year on Broadway, took in $2,125,561, a house record for an eight-show week at the Minskoff Theatre. "The Lion King" posted a massive increase of $723,493, more than several shows made all week.

It was all mostly welcome news for producers, who had watched helplessly as Superstorm Sandy closed theaters for several days and eventually cost them $8.5 million. But the latest numbers also show that despite the new gains, Broadway box offices still lag the $28,086,475 earned during Thanksgiving week last season.

Two holiday shows, "Elf" and a musical based on the holiday movie "A Christmas Story," logged nine performances over the week, one more than the average of eight, and both saw revenues jump. "Elf" scored $997,145 and "A Christmas Story" took in $1,104,312.

Musicals are always better draws than plays but several plays didn't see similar increases, despite having star power. "The Heiress," starring Jessica Chastain, lost $109,000 over the week, "Grace" with Paul Rudd pulled in only $320,199, or 34 percent of its potential revenue, and "Dead Accounts," the new Katie Holmes' play which has yet to open, scored only $402,460 from a potential of $1,008,461.

Cameron Bailey on Indian Film's Global Appeal - Hollywood Reporter

As a regular visitor to India, Toronto Film Festival artistic director Cameron Bailey has always been a strong supporter of the country's vibrant film sector. He demonstrated that support earlier this year when TIFF's City to City program showcased films from Mumbai. While visiting? the Film Bazaar in Goa, which is organized by India's National Film Development Corporation, Bailey sat down with THR to discuss the Indian film sector's evolution, how it compares with China and why Bollywood stars are having crossover success in Hollywood.

The Hollywood Reporter: There seems to be a new energy around India's indie scene right now. What do you make of this vibe at the Film Bazaar?

Cameron Bailey: I am hopeful for a greater diversity of Indian cinema... There are projects at Film Bazaar which are being made in different regions and languages, some for the first time. That I think has a real richness that can be tapped. The stories of the smaller cultural groups - whether they are tribal communities or far removed from bustling Mumbai ? I want to see more of them and that's beginning to happen.

?
THR: Is there a unique Indian voice that you are beginning to hear now?

Bailey: That's an interesting question. Political restrictions in a country like Iran have produced a very unique cinema. India doesn't have those kind of restrictions but there could be restrictions of the marketplace which exerts an enormous commercial influence on Indian filmmakers. And this can be as damaging as political restrictions because it limits what you can do. What I like is when filmmakers start engaging with this challenge: they don't accept it or reject but contest it. And that's what happened in Iran. You are right next door to China with a big market and thriving scene.
?
THR: But it seems China has developed its own voice via its martial arts epics. Do you think India will have multiple voices?
?
Bailey: Of course, there are so many languages here to start with so India has to have multiple voices. If you look at the India-China comparison a little more, China is usually engaging with historical stories. But in India what you have is a conflict between tradition and modernity. Its in every element of Indian society ? from the generation conflict to the rural-urban divide. So if there is a voice then this conflict could be a recurring theme in Indian cinema.
?
THR: Generally, how is Indian cinema evolving in your opinion?
?
Bailey: When I started programming Indian cinema in 2005 at Toronto, I saw a kind of split between mainstream Bollywood and the arthouse scene. The big change I have seen since is there are now filmmakers who pay attention to the commercial market but are also making personal films in a more independent way. You see this in western Europe but not so much in India. This is gratifying to see that filmmakers are seeing both sensibiltiies and they know their audiences are not just Indian or the diaspora but global.
?
THR: How is the international perception of Indian cinema changing?
?
Bailey: The fact that the head of Fortissimo Films (Michael J. Werner) is here at Film Bazaar in Goa says a lot. Seven years ago he was not attending an event like this, which now has people from Tribeca and Cannes. We are here paying attention to the enormous potential beyond the commercial arena. There is no country on earth like India where filmmaking is so vital and productive. The quality of film technicians is also unmatched. But I still think some filmmakers are paying too much attention to the domestic audience and that might be a controversial thing to say but I think there's a wider world out there. Look at Scandivania which has a small domestic market but they have filmmakers like Lars von Trier who are known globally. As an Indian filmmaker you have to be clear who is your audience. If it is the strong domestic market that is absolutely fine but if you have global aspirations then you will have to think differently.

?
THR: With Hollywood studios fortifying their India presence what do you see ahead?
?
Bailey: People looking at commercial cinema from outside sometimes stick too closely to the formula and they may not always succeed. So the initial attempts by Warner and Sony to produce Bollywood films were not so successful. As an example, Korea offers an interesting case study with filmmakers like Bong Joon-ho (The Host) and Park Chon-Wook (Oldboy). They are now both making films in Hollywood for studios. The South Korean model is to make thrillers but they were arthouse and very intense with thriller elements, yet they had a kind of extreme quality which came from auteur filmmaking. And that attracted the attention of the West via festivals and hence Hollywood. But they were also high on technical qualities, which India already has. Like food, films also need a special flavoring. Indian food in Toronto is differently flavored than in India and you can see that in films. So you have to come up with the right flavor.
?
THR: What was the response to Toronto's City to City program this year which featured films from Mumbai?
?
Bailey: It opened a door to a new kind of Indian cinema because the big Bollywood films are so dominant and people think that's all there is from India. So for the first time a number of people at the festival realised these films don't have songs or big stars or fantasies but are real about contemporary India. That was a huge success as I wanted to break down that image of Indian cinema just being Bollywood. We have showcased arthouse filmmakers in the past whose films are more connected to poetry rather than popcorn. Anurag Kashyap's Gangs of Wasseypur was a popcorn movie but it's something like a Quentin Tarantino movie.
?
THR: There's always been this long running debate about India's presence on the international festival circuit which is quite low given the size of the industry. Do you see that changing?
?
Bailey: At Toronto we show about six films from India in a regular year, though this year we had 16 because of the City to City program. But for a country producing a thousand films, India's representation is low. Compare that to France from where we are showing an average of 15 films though the country produces far fewer films than India. But they have a whole industry of filmmakers who produce films that travel the festival circuit. I think that is now beginning to happen in India when you see directors like Ashim Ahluwalia (Miss Lovely) or Dibakar Banerjee (Shanghai). They are as sophisticiated as anyone working in Paris. They are informed about international trends and as long as they can navigate that very complicated set of influences between what the Indian market wants, what the world wants and what they want for themselves, then they are going to be the ones to produce the films that will travel.

STORY: Festival Director Cameron Bailey Embraces Public Aspect of Event (Q&A)
?
THR: But how viable can that be?
?
Bailey: That really is upto the Indian audience if they want to come out and support these kind of films. And its upto the industry to deliver these kind of cinemas. What is sorely lacking in India is that there are no arthouse cinemas. I am sure there are going to be lots of people who want to see a good Indian arthouse film only if there were enough cinemas for them. Exhibition and distribution has to change.
?
THR: Taking a long term view, what is the image of India that you would like the rest of the world to see through films?
?
Bailey: I want the world to see contempoary urban India because there is that stereotypical and ridiculous image of poverty that has to change. You know how French cinema communicates an image of France as being urbane, cosmopolitan, sophisticated and romantic??Why not have films from India that show how incredibly cosmopolitian and modern Mumbai or Delhi are? I want to see more of that. On the other side I am also transported when I see parts of India that people don't even know existed as seen in Frozen by Shivajee Chandrabhushan which was filmed entirely in the remote regions of Ladakh.

?THR: A country is also known by its talent. What are your views on Indian talent given some are making international inroads?
?
Bailey: I think there is enormous acting talent in India but often they haven't been directed well. And that's because they have been directed for purely commercial reasons. With the right combination of good writing, direction and performance, these actors could have international appeal. Nana Patekar is one of the best character actors not just in India, but the world. Abhay Deol is incredibly charismatic and is becoming the face of new Indian cinema. He could be like Dustin Hoffman was in the seventies, an actor who embodies a revolution in cinema. Konkona Sen Sharma can be very good as well. They have the talent but they need everything else around them. Its a good start for Indian actors who have started to appear in mainstream Hollywood films (like Irrfan Khan in The Amazing Spider-Man) but it can't end there. They can hold up against big Hollywood stars and I am not surprised. For instance, Anupam Kher's performance in Silver Linings Playbook is terrific.
