Django Unchained
"A sharp shock of a film in an Awards season very full of movies so noble they become immobile. It's wildly unlikely to get much love from the Academy, and that's fine-bluntly, it's too good for them. With its bloody stew of history and hysteria, action taken from movies and atrocities taken from fact, Django isn't just a movie only America could make-it's also a movie only America needs to." Boxoffice Magazine.?Full Review.
"Exactly what you might expect from the fearless, controversial director of "Pulp Fiction" - it's overlong, raunchy, shocking, grim, exaggerated, self-indulgently over-the-top and so politically incorrect it demands a new definition of the term. It is also bold, original, mesmerizing, stylish and one hell of a piece of entertainment." Rex Reed of New York Observer.?Full Review.
"Django Unchained also has the pure, almost meaningless excitement which I found sorely lacking in Tarantino's previous film, Inglourious Basterds, with its misfiring spaghetti-Nazi trope and boring plot. I can only say Django delivers, wholesale, that particular narcotic and delirious pleasure that Tarantino still knows how to confect in the cinema, something to do with the manipulation of surfaces. It's as unwholesome, deplorable and delicious as a forbidden cigarette." Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian.?Full Review.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says the Newtown school shootings have changed the gun control debate and that rural America is ready to be part of a national conversation that he believes could bring people together.
Vilsack says the debate has to start with respect for the Second Amendment right to bear arms and a recognition that hunting is a way of life for millions of Americans.
But Vilsack said that the nation has reached "a different circumstance" in the gun control debate. It will take time, but it's now "potentially a unifying conversation," he said. President Barack Obama recognizes that changes to gun laws can't just be decreed from Washington but must come from the "grassroots up."
Vilsack was interviewed Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. Sen. Michael Crapo, the Idaho Republican arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, doesn't plan to fight the charges when he appears in court in January, a spokesman said Friday.
Meanwhile, results from a secondary blood alcohol test performed at the jail show the conservative three-term senator registered a higher level about an hour after being arrested than when he was first tested by the police officer who stopped him.
Police have said Crapo registered a blood alcohol level of 0.11 percent when he was pulled over early Sunday in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Va., after running a red light. But a secondary test performed after Crapo was brought to the jailhouse ? the one that will be used in court ? registered at 0.14, nearly twice the legal limit, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the arrest. The official wasn't authorized to release information publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
"He does not plan to contest the charges," said Crapo spokesman Lindsay Nothern, adding that Crapo has consulted with a local Virginia attorney ahead of his Jan. 4 court hearing.
A blood alcohol level of 0.14 means Crapo tested 1/100 of a percentage point below the level that would have mandated jail time under Virginia law. The legal limit in Virginia, which has strict drunken driving laws, is 0.08 percent.
Crapo has apologized and taken responsibility for the incident in a statement, but he hasn't spoken publicly about the arrest. Crapo returned to Washington from Idaho on Wednesday as lawmakers pursue a solution to the looming fiscal cliff, but he wasn't immediately available to comment Friday.
A number of factors could explain the discrepancy between the preliminary breathalyzer test, performed on the street when Crapo was pulled over shortly after midnight, and the jailhouse test, conducted just before 2 a.m. The higher level at the jailhouse could indicate Crapo was drinking shortly before getting behind the wheel and his body was still absorbing the alcohol. But another possible explanation is that blood alcohol testing simply isn't a perfect science, said Michael Hlastala, a breath testing expert and former physiology professor at the University of Washington.
"It could be consistent with rising blood alcohol levels," Hlastala said. "But it just depends on the way the person was breathing, and other factors."
Alexandria police say Crapo was alone in his vehicle when he ran a red light, was pulled over and failed field sobriety tests. He was taken to the Alexandria jail and released on an unsecured $1,000 bond about 5 a.m. Sunday. Crapo is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 4 ? the day after the start of the next Congress. Crapo was handily re-elected in 2010 and won't have to run again until 2016.
It's still not clear where Crapo was coming from when he was arrested, and the senator hasn't explained the circumstances of the arrest. Court records show Crapo residing in Southeast Washington, a short drive over the Potomac River from the historic suburb where he was arrested.
The 61-year-old's arrest two days before Christmas stunned colleagues and constituents alike, not only because of his squeaky-clean image but also because the senator, a Mormon, had said previously he abstains from alcohol, in accordance with his church's practices.
Many of Crapo's Republican colleagues, including Sen. Jim Risch, Idaho's senior senator, have come to his defense, suggesting Crapo can overcome the indiscretion and remain a viable leader. Crapo's home-state newspaper, the Idaho Statesman, ran an editorial with the headline: "We can all learn from Sen. Crapo's mistake."

Genie Backup Manager Home Edition is a long-established consumer-level backup program that has always impressed me with its clarity, power, and well-chosen range of genuinely useful features. The previous version won our Editors' Choice award, and the latest one comes tantalizingly close to winning it again. The only thing that holds it back is its inability to create a bootable rescue disk on a USB flash drive. It still creates bootable rescue disks only on optical disks, and the era when virtually every computer had an optical drive is over. If you can lie with this one minor limitation, then Genie Backup Manager is a fast, efficient, and beautifully designed application for saving and restoring data.
Interface and Options
Genie Backup Manager's main menu is elegant and informative, with big buttons leading to wizards that perform Backup, Restore, and Disaster Recovery. (The Disaster Recovery wizard creates an emergency recovery disk that you can boot from when disaster strikes.) The Backup wizard lets you create and optionally reuse backup jobs. You create these jobs in a simple interface that lets you choose a backup location either on a local disk, including optical and USB disks, or a network disk, or an FTP location, with fully up-to-date support for secure FTP if needed.
You can choose to backup items from your Windows user "profile," which means that you can select documents from your Documents folder, or media files, or Outlook data files, Windows settings and registry data, and much else. You can also choose specific folders, disks, or Windows-specific locations such as your Libraries and shared folders in a HomeGroup.
Further options let you save your backups in ZIP format or with all files readily accessible. One especially useful feature lets you create archives in the form of executable programs that you can run on computers that don't have Genie Backup Manager installed. This feature reflects the very real possibility that you won't have your backup software available when you need to restore your data in a hurry, or that you sometimes need to restore your backups on someone else's computer.
Backing Up
Genie offers you the standard choice of full or incremental backups, with an option to make your backups "mirror" the source folders, so that files that you delete on the source will also be deleted from the backup. This is a valuable backup type that works in a similar way to file synching services like Dropbox, but it should only be used with the understanding that it won't let you recover deleted files. You can also schedule backups in an intuitive and flexible way. When you've created a backup job, you can modify or reuse it by selecting it from a list in the Backup wizard. You can also modify existing jobs from the app's main menu.
If you choose this program for the non-experts in your family, you can switch to an even simpler interface that offers only the option to create and run a Backup job, or to Restore files. But if you want to use your expertise, you can click unobtrusive "More settings" buttons in the wizard interface and set up e-mail notifications of backup jobs or only of errors and other expert-level features.
Performance
Genie Backup Manager wasn't as speedy as Acronis or NTI, taking 2 minutes 45 seconds to backup an 800 MB folder to a USB3 drive?almost twice the time as Acronis?but speed isn't the most crucial factor in backups. What matters most is reliability and ease of use, because if a backup program isn't easy to use, you're not likely to use it.
I like Genie Backup Manager a lot, and if it could only create emergency boot media on a flash drive, I would happily promote it to share our backup software Editors' Choice with Acronis Backup and Recovery.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) ? Instead of long beards and robes, they wear track suits and T-shirts. Their tablets are electronic, not hewn of stone, and they hold smartphones, not staffs. They may not look the part, but this ragtag group of Israelis is training to become the next generation of prophets.
For just 200 shekels, about $53, and in only 40 short classes, the Cain and Abel School for Prophets says it will certify anyone as a modern-day Jewish soothsayer.
The school, which launched classes this month, has baffled critics, many of whom have dismissed it as a blasphemy or a fraud.
On a religious level, Jewish tradition recognizes a few dozen prophets from the biblical era ? from the monumental figures of Abraham, Moses and Elijah to lesser known foretellers of doom and tormented questioners like Micah the Morashtite and Habakkuk. Tradition says no one can be a prophet ever since the Romans destroyed the second temple in Jerusalem in the year 70 and the era of prophecy can only be revived with the arrival of the Messiah and the temple's rebuilding. As one Talmudic phrase puts it, the only prophets now are children and fools.
But also, on a philosophical level, how do you learn divine inspiration in school? And can anyone learn?
"There is no way to teach prophecy," said Rachel Elior, a professor of Jewish thought at Jerusalem's Hebrew University. "It's like opening a school for becoming Einstein or Mozart."
That hasn't deterred the school's founder and sole teacher Shmuel Hapartzy, a follower of Chabad, a worldwide Orthodox Jewish outreach and worship movement that has come under fire because part of its membership crowned its late leader the Messiah. The Chabad movement in Israel has distanced itself from the school.
Anyone looking in the curriculum for "Parting the Sea 101" or "How to Predict the Future" or even "Principles of Proclaiming A Jeremiad" will be disappointed. Instead, students learn about the meaning of dreams, the classification of angels, the mysteries of the holy spirit. They learn how to discern a person's inner feelings from his or her external behavior and appearance.
Hapartzy can't guarantee his course will give his students a direct line to God. But, he says, the syllabus provides the essential tools to bring out the prophet in anyone.
"In the past there were prophets but even now, in our time, divinity is being revealed to everyone. We just need to open our eyes to it," said Hapartzy at his introductory course, which is held at a religious center in grungy south Tel Aviv, known more for its licentious street parties than piety.
And graduates do get a diploma.
There's little "profit" motive to the venture. Hapartzy said the token fee is to prove students' dedication and is donated to the religious center hosting the school. There's no application process ? anyone who wants to become a prophet can do so by just showing up for the course.
The school's inaugural class this month welcomed a mixed bag of 12 students ranging in age from 18 to 50. One man had scruffy stubble and wore a blue track suit. Another walked in with a guitar slung over his back. Others fiddled with their phones during the lecture or stepped out to smoke. Two had long beards and wore Jewish skullcaps.
Darya Popdinitz, who drove in from Jerusalem for the course, wore a pink hat with dangling pompons. She said her knowledge of biblical prophets was limited, but she was "curious" about the course.
"It's a real diverse mix of people," said Hapartzy.
The class itself is a modest study group. In the small room, the men sat in a circle around Hapartzy, with the women separately in a corner, following Orthodox Judaism's segregation of the sexes. Hapartzy lectures and hands out study material ? photocopied excerpts of holy books ? and a question period follows. The students' homework is to conduct good deeds and pray.
The 34-year-old Hapartzy has a varied background. A software engineer and Russian immigrant, with a long beard and dressed in black ultra-Orthodox garb, he said he was originally an atheist. He dabbled in "sciences, mysticism, Chinese philosophy, astrology, black magic and Christian cults" until, he said, he turned to Judaism.
He compiled the study materials from writings he said could be found in any religious library ? including, no surprise, the books of the biblical prophets. Since there's no traditional set course for becoming a prophet, Hapartzy used his own judgment for what subjects would be appropriate.
Like some in the Chabad movement, Hapartzy believes that the Messiah has already come and that the age of redemption is nigh, so it has possible to have prophets again. Claims by some that late leader Rabbi Menachem Schneerson was the Messiah split the Chabad movement and brought harsh criticism from other Jews.
Hapartzy said his school aims to prepare everyone for the new messianic era. The school is named after the sons of Adam and Eve ? Cain was the first murderer and Abel the first victim. The name represents a person's different spiritual poles, which the school aims to unite, Hapartzy said.
The desire to open up the realm of prophecy to anyone has raised hackles in some circles.
"It's completely crazy," said Menachem Brod, a Chabad spokesman. Facebook commenters have accused the school of "charlatanism and blasphemy."
Roie Greenvald, a 27-year-old tennis instructor attending the classes, also showed some skepticism. While he expressed interest in the spiritual development the course offers, one crucial detail stands in the way of his religious elevation.
"I'm not going to become a prophet," he said. "I don't think it pays very well."

DORSET, Vt. (AP) ? Vermont State Police say a man faces a drunken driving charge after driving onto the lawn of the historic home in Dorset once owned by the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Police say 55-year-old Donald Blood III of Marlboro, Mass., was ordered to appear in court in Bennington on Jan. 14.
Police say Blood thought he was driving into a parking lot, but actually it was the lawn of the Wilson House, built in 1852, the birthplace of AA co-founder Bill Wilson.
The Wilson House's website describes it as a "place of sanctuary where people can come to give thanks to God for their new lives."
It still hosts several AA meetings each week.

Animal advocates say it?s not fair to kill animals owned by the public trust and indispensable to ecosystem health just to protect privately held livestock
PROTECTION RACKET: The U.S. kills 100,000 carnivores yearly under the Wildlife Services program, mainly to protect livestock. However, its own statistics show most livestock losses result from weather, disease, illness and birthing problems, not predation. Image: iStockPhoto/Thinkstock
Dear EarthTalk: A friend of mine told me that our government kills thousands of wild animals like bears and wolves every year in the name of protecting livestock. How can the government, which is supposed to protect dwindling numbers of animals, instead be killing them??Amy Pratt, Troy, N.Y.
Actually, the federal government kills some 100,000 carnivores every year under the U.S. Department of Agriculture?s (USDA?s) Wildlife Services program. While the program does much more than so-called ?predator control??threatened and endangered species conservation, invasive species mitigation, wildlife disease monitoring, airport bird strike prevention, rabies and rodent control?killing bears, wolves, coyotes and mountain lions to protect livestock does take up $100 million of the federal budget each year.
Animal advocates say it?s not fair to kill animals owned in essence by the public trust and indispensable to ecosystem health just to protect privately held livestock, let alone spend millions of tax dollars doing it.
?Working directly with commercial operators and state and local governments, Wildlife Services uses a combination of lethal control methods, like trapping, aerial gunning, poisoning, and denning (killing young in their dens), and some non-lethal control methods,? reports the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). ?But driven by narrow agricultural interests, these predator control activities often ignore the greater public need for a healthy environment, fiscal responsibility, and safe public lands.?
NRDC cites USDA statistics showing that most livestock losses result from weather, disease, illness and birthing problems?not predation. They also argue that the lethal methods employed by Wildlife Services have led to dozens of human and pet injuries and deaths and degrade ecosystems that rely on healthy predator populations to function. Also the two most commonly used poisons, Compound 1080 and sodium cyanide, go beyond killing animals and wreak havoc on entire ecosystems.
Predator Defense, another group committed to ending federal predator control efforts, says that it is important to maintain healthy populations of the very predators Wildlife Services works to kill. When, for instance, predators are around to keep deer and elk populations in check, more and varied kinds of plants are given space and time to grow, in turn preserving and creating habitat for many different species.
?Wildlife Services? predator control work cries out for reform,? says NRDC. The group recommends bringing more transparency to the process so the public can assess how tax dollars are being used; taking a more scientific approach instead of centering the program around the demands of commercial interests; holding the program to higher environmental standards; ending the cruelest, most hazardous and environmentally harmful killing methods; and requiring non-lethal methods when possible.
There has been no decisive legislation to stop predator control efforts, but a bill introduced into the House by California Republican John Campbell III calls for amending the Toxic Substances Control Act to prohibit the use of Compound 1080 and sodium cyanide for predator control. The bill (H.R. 4214) was referred to committee and may or may not see a floor vote this year.

The rumor that actress and singer Jessica Simpson is pregnant again was confirmed Christmas morning when she tweeted a photo of seven-month-old daughter Maxwell Drew sitting in a patch of sand marked "BIG SIS." And to no one's surprise, Simpson won't be following her Weight Watchers diet program while she's expecting, even though she's their spokesperson.Simpson "will not be following the program during the pregnancy while her weight and well-being are monitored by her obstetrician, as is recommended for any woman during pregnancy," Weight Watchers said in a statement.
Simpson also confirms her second pregnancy in a new commercial for Weight Watchers, in which she says, "This year is all about new beginnings for me. I lost over 50 pounds on Weight Watchers and did not have to be perfect to do it. Being healthy has become a part of who I am, which is great timing because I'm having another baby."

Ramona Chamber of Commerce has selected three individuals, three businesses, and three organizations as 2012 Annual Awards Finalists for, respectively, Ramona Citizen of the Year, Ramona Business of the Year, and Ramona Non-Profit Organization of the Year.
For approximately 50 years, Ramona has recognized individuals and business owners who have continually dedicated their time and resources in making Ramona a better place to work and live, reports the chamber. This year?s finalists were chosen on their volunteerism, impact of services, contributions made to Ramona as a whole along with the selfless giving of time and effort.
John Degenfelder, Kim Lasley and Jill Bacorn are finalists for Citizen of the Year based on their individual contributions to the community, volunteerism, and leadership.
Ramona Rebels Elite Cheer, W.T. Kirkman Company, and Pamo Valley Winery are the business finalists.
?Each business deserves to be recognized for their abundant community support, countless contributions and overall dedication to enriching Ramona,? chamber director Sally Westbrook said on behalf of the Ramona Chamber of Commerce.
Ramona Rotary, Ramona Garden Club, and Ramona Trails Association are finalists under the nonprofit organization category.
?During the challenges of the economy, these agencies have continued to bring a tremendous amount of value to our town,? said Westbrook. ?Their tireless efforts have made things happen that might not otherwise be possible. ?
Selection of a few from the many nominations was challenging and the chamber recognizes the caliber and impressive number of contributions within the community of Ramona, said Westbrook.
?The finalists are to be congratulated and recognized for going over and above community expectations,? she said.
Nominations for the awards came from the entire community and were not limited to chamber members nor were the nominees limited to chamber members. Nominations were accepted from Sept. 1 through Nov. 15.
?Participation in the nominating of all the candidates is very much appreciated,? said Westbrook.

Weight loss programs that cost money have varying degrees of success, but cutting your calories and increasing your energy expenditure costs you little. Some weight loss techniques cost nothing, yet successful dieters employ them regularly. Using a combination of these techniques and savvy shopping brings you low-cost weight loss. Plan inexpensive, low-calorie meals and measure portions to lose weight, and spend some of the money you save on new clothing to fit your svelte figure. The amphibious vehicle sank in Lake Garda, killing 23 US soldiers just days before the end of the fighting in Europe. But the boat, and the remains of the soldiers, were lost until this week.

Amateur historians had been searching for months for the relic ? a six-wheel, two-ton amphibious DUKW vehicle that sank during a storm on Lake Garda on the night of April 30, 1945 ? but were only able to confirm their find on Monday.
The DUKW, pronounced ?duck,? was carrying supplies and ammunition to an American military camp near the town of Torbole, at the northern tip of the lake, but sank as a result of gale force winds that were battering the area that night.
The truck was carrying 24 US soldiers aged between 18 and 25 from the 10th Mountain Division, only one of whom survived the accident. The men who died were from the division's 605th Field Artillery Battalion, as well as a driver from the Quartermaster Corps.
The sinking happened just days before the end of fighting in Europe and the armistice with the Germans, on May 8, 1945.
?It was the biggest disaster to happen in modern times on Lake Garda,? said Mauro Fusato, the leader of the team that found the DUKW.?
The wreck of the vehicle was found with sonar lying at a depth of 905 feet ? one reason why it had not been located before.
?On Sunday, the sonar gave us an initial image, but it wasn?t clear enough to be able to say for sure that it was the DUKW,? Mr. Fusato told Ansa, an Italian news agency.
?On Monday, though, we used a remote-controlled camera and we saw it. It is intact and sitting upright.?
The next step is to try to identify any human remains that may still be lying around the wreck, as well as military equipment, insignia, and personal possessions. ?There are lots of objects around it, which could be the skeletons or remains of the soldiers who drowned,? said Fusato.
Any operation to recover them would be highly complex and technically challenging, however. The wreck lies too deep for divers, and there are old fishing nets and other debris on the lake bed that could snag underwater subs. Ultimately it will be up to the US government to decide whether to proceed with a recovery, the researchers said, adding that they had informed American diplomats of the discovery.
