(AP Photo/Michael Mariant, Pool, File)

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A look at key moments this past week in the wrongful death trial in Los Angeles between Michael Jackson's mother, Katherine Jackson, and concert giant AEG Live, and what is expected at court in the week ahead:

THE CASE

Jackson's mother wants a jury to determine that the promoter of Jackson's planned comeback concerts didn't properly investigate Dr. Conrad Murray, who a criminal jury convicted of involuntary manslaughter for Jackson's June 2009 death. AEG's attorney says the case is about personal choice, namely Jackson's decision to have Murray serve as his doctor and give him doses of a powerful anesthetic as a sleep aid. Millions, possibly billions, of dollars are at stake.

WHAT HAPPENED

? Jurors heard about Jackson in life and death from a pair of women who knew him and from coroner's officials who pieced together how he died. Jackson's mother skipped morbid testimony about Jackson's autopsy, but listened as her son's friend and makeup artist told jurors about watching him perform, and gradually become more dependent on prescription drugs.

? Jackson's longtime makeup artist Karen Faye testified that she overheard AEG co-CEO Paul Gongaware tell the singer's assistant to do "whatever it takes" to get the superstar out of a locked bathroom and to a rehearsal. Faye said Gongaware and another AEG official pushed Jackson to perform despite his emaciated appearance and signs of paranoia.

WHAT THE JURY SAW

? A black-and-white photo of Jackson's lifeless body lying on a table before his autopsy. The image was shown in open court for less than a minute.

? Faye repeatedly break down in tears as she described how Jackson trusted his doctors but became more dependent on prescription medications in the early 1990s when he was on his "Dangerous" tour and facing his first bout of child molestation allegations.

QUOTABLE MOMENTS

? "Michael would do five songs to the dancers' one. I never saw anything like it." (Makeup artist and hair stylist Karen Faye, describing Jackson's stamina and ability to put all pain aside while he was performing.)

? "When I hugged him, he just felt like marble. But when I hugged, when I saw him briefly in 2006, he didn't feel like that anymore. He felt thin." (Dancer and choreographer Alif Sankey, who contrasted Jackson's appearance and build when she met him while shooting the "Smooth Criminal" video with the final years of his life.)

OUTSIDE THE COURTROOM

? Wade Robson, a choreographer who testified in Jackson's defense at his child molestation

trial, filed court paperwork stating that he was abused by Jackson over a seven-year period, according to his attorney. He has not stated how much he is seeking from Jackson's estate.

? A 20-minute preview of the Cirque du Soleil show "Immortal" based on Jackson's career and music was previewed at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay hotel-casino. The show is scheduled to open June 29.

WHAT'S NEXT

? Jurors will hear from AEG Live's first witnesses, a pair of choreographers who worked with Jackson and who will be called out of order to accommodate their touring schedule.

? Deputy Medical Examiner Christopher Rogers is expected to resume testifying and may offer an estimate of how long Jackson would have lived if he hadn't received an overdose of the anesthetic propofol.

Tim Tebow blackballed by NFL?

Has Tim Tebow been unofficially blackballed from the NFL?

That's what Yahoo Sports writer Michael Silver is suggesting.

After one season, the New York Jets released the third-string quarterback on April 29. And in the ensuing three weeks, no serious offers have been made.

"No NFL team seems to want him ? as a starter, backup, converted H-back or fake-punt decoy ? and it's not like he's fending off big-money offers from Canada, either," writes Silver. And Silver blames "Tebowmania."

Yes, Tim Tebow draws a media crowd ? everywhere he goes. As a backup, backup quarterback, one could easily argue that all the attention on Tim Tebow was a distraction for the other Jets players. His media coverage was way beyond his contribution to the team. That kind of spotlight should be on your starting quarterback.

RECOMMENDED: How much do you know about Tim Tebow? A quiz

Silver quotes an unnamed AFC coach who says: "He seems like a great guy to have on a team, and I'd be tempted to bring him in as our backup. But it's just not worth dealing with all the stuff that comes with it."

There's a simple solution to that: Play Tebow. Judge him by his performance on the field, not by the attention his fans give him.

Tebow was good enough as a starting quarterback in Denver to produce a 7-4 record, and pull off an overtime win against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs. Yes, Tebow doesn't have the arm that most starting NFL quarterbacks boast ? in a game that has evolved into a QB-centric passing sport. That's a huge disadvantage for Tebow.

So, maybe Tebowmania is the excuse that is being given for those who don't believe he has the appropriate skill set.

But why isn't more credence being given to the former Jets QB Vinny Testaverde's comments about Tebow?

Testaverde says he and former NFL QB Chris Weinke worked with Tebow in April. "Chris and I looked at Tim careful and we were both amazed," Testaverde told Rich Cimini at ESPNNewYork.com. "Everybody has been focusing on his throwing motion, trying to fix that, but nobody had picked up his footwork. His footwork was all screwed up. Chris and I looked at each other after about four or five throws, and we saw the same thing. We got his footwork fixed. His throwing motion is now a non-issue. "He throws with what we call 'effortless power.' He doesn't have that elongated motion anymore and his head isn't moving 2 1/2 feet when he throws it."

How many NFL quarterbacks need a few years of seasoning? Most do.

It's possible, that like Kurt Warner or Doug Flutie, Tim Tebow will have to go to the Canadian Football League or the Arena Football League to polish his game before the NFL will give him another shot.

Here's another theory that hasn't gotten a lot of attention yet: Is Tebow ? or Tebowmania ? "too Christian"? Tim Tebow wears his faith on his uniform sleeve. Did his on-field Tebowing embarrass some team owners? Is it this particular kind of media circus that bothers team owners and coaches?

Tim Tebow may never play in the NFL again. But Plan B could be a career as a motivational speaker, a preacher - or a politician. Last Thursday, Tebow was the featured speaker at the the Economic Club of Southwest Michigan in Benton Harbor.

"If all I am is a football player and that is it I would consider my life to be a tragedy,? Tebow told the attendees, who ranged in age from pre-teens to senior citizens, according to MLive.com. "Being an inspiration is more important that winning football games. I want to be a great role model to the next generation.

"In the short term, I want to be the best football player I can be. In the long term, I want to inspire people. At the end of the day I can do that through the platform football gave me."

Tebow talked about how he returned to the sidelines after University of Florida beat Oklahoma to win the 2009 national championship. His coach, Urban Meyer, took off his headset and embraced the quarterback. Tebow told the audience that he would cherish that moment for the rest of his life and perhaps even longer.

?How cool would it be after my time on earth to have the Heavenly Father take off his headset and say, ?Timmy, I love you. You finished strong,?? Tebow said.

The question for Tebow football fans: Will Tim Tebow be around the NFL long enough to finish strong?

Indian companies at center of global cyber heist

By Dinesh Nair and Jim Finkle

DUBAI/BOSTON (Reuters) - Two companies with major operations in India were the weak links that opened the door to a $45 million global cyber heist brought to light by U.S. authorities this week.

EnStage Inc, which operates from Bangalore, and ElectraCard Services, which is based in Pune, processed card payments for the two Middle Eastern banks that were hit in the theft, according to several people familiar with the situation.

U.S. prosecutors said on Thursday that hackers broke into two card processing companies, raising the balances and withdrawal limits on accounts that were then exploited in coordinated ATM withdrawals around the world.

The prosecutors did not name the two companies but said one was based in India and the other in the United States.

According to a U.S. official and a bank employee, who both spoke on condition of anonymity, ElectraCard Services was the company that processed prepaid travel cards for National Bank of Ras Al Khaimah PSC (RAKBANK). RAKBANK suffered a $5 million coordinated heist at ATMs around the world on December 21 last year, according to the U.S. indictment.

Ramesh Mengawade, the chief executive of ElectraCard Services and its parent company, Opus Software Solutions, could not be reached through his assistant or by email on Saturday. Calls to the mobile phone of another company official were not answered.

EnStage, which is incorporated in Cupertino, California, is the company that processed card payments for Bank of Muscat of Oman, according to a source close to Bank of Muscat. Bank of Muscat lost $40 million in a coordinated heist on February 19, according to Thursday's indictment.

Officials at enStage could not be reached on Saturday, either in Bangalore or in Cupertino. In a statement in the Times of India, Chief Executive Govind Setlur said the company has implemented security enhancements and monitoring since the theft.

"Our customers were adversely affected by this sophisticated crime," Setlur said in the statement. "We are deeply committed to information security, and we will continue to take all reasonable measures to ensure our networks are secured from criminal actors."

MORE WORK FOR BIG PROCESSORS?

Bank of Muscat has not commented on the case.

MasterCard, the network under which the cards used in the heist were issued, has said its security was not compromised. MasterCard bought a 12.5 percent stake in ElectraCard in 2010, ElectraCard has said.

Cyber security experts said the global scope and speed of the $45 million bank theft was unprecedented. The global gang had operatives in 27 countries who fanned out to thousands of ATMs in a matter of hours, withdrawing money using fraudulent prepaid debit cards, according to U.S. prosecutors.

The U.S. Justice Department gave details of the heist on Thursday in an indictment against eight men accused of being the New York cell of the organization. The department said seven of the men have been arrested.

The ringleaders of the global operation were believed to be outside the United States, but U.S. prosecutors have declined to give details, citing the continuing investigation. Germany is the only other country so far to announce arrests.

Eddie Schwartz, chief information security officer for RSA Inc, a firm that helps banks fight payment card fraud, said that it is not surprising that hackers would target banks that rely on Indian firms to process transactions.

Schwartz, who is based in Washington, said there is not as much government oversight in India as there is in the United States and Western Europe.

"Hackers view India as a target. It's got a fast-moving economy, a fast-moving IT infrastructure," Schwartz said.

Madeline Aufseeser, a senior analyst with Aite Group who follows payments processors, said she was relieved to learn that the case appeared to be limited to smaller processors.

"It looks like an isolated, very targeted incident," she said, noting that the major firms in the industry have highly sophisticated protocols to limit fraud damages.

The big players include First Data Corp, FIS, Galileo Mastercard Inc's Mastercard Integrated Processing Solutions, Tsys and Visa Inc's Visa Debit Processing Service.

Philip Philliou, managing partner of Philliou Partners LLC, a firm that helps banks and retailers select payment processors, predicted smaller processing firms will lose business as a result of this theft. Banks will decide they are not willing to assume the additional risk that comes with using smaller firms, he said.

Alleged Dominican head of New York ATM thefts was shot dead

By Manuel Jimenez

SANTO DOMINGO (Reuters) - An alleged leader of the New York arm of a global cyber crime ring, which stole $45 million from two Middle Eastern banks, was shot dead during an attempted robbery in the Dominican Republic last month, Dominican police said on Friday.

Alberto Lajud-Pena, 23, was killed on April 27 in a house in the city of San Francisco de Macoris about 100 miles northeast of the capital, Santo Domingo, according to police.

Investigators found $100,000 in cash in the house, as well as an M-16 assault rifle, two 9 mm pistols, a revolver, ammunition clips and a telescopic sight. The money and weapons belonged to Lajud-Pena, police said.

Lajud-Pena was one of eight men that U.S. prosecutors said on Thursday were part of the New York cell of an international criminal syndicate that perpetuated one of the biggest bank heists in the world.

The crime ring hacked into the networks of two credit card processing companies in December 2012 and February 2013, respectively, to steal prepaid debit card data which they used to fraudulently withdraw money from cash machines in 27 countries over a matter of hours.

The U.S. Justice Department said the New York group was led by Lajud-Pena and pulled $2.4 million from almost 3,000 ATMs in the city during the space of 10 hours in February. Lajud-Pena's alleged co-defendants are all Hispanic men who were arrested in Yonkers, a New York City suburb that is home to a large Dominican population, U.S. prosecutors said on Thursday.

Lajud-Pena was shot and killed by a gang of three men, of whom the leader was Carlos Manuel Jim?nez, alias "La Vaca Loca" (Mad Cow), according to police in the Dominican Republic. Jim?nez and the two men were in custody, police said.

It was not immediately clear if the gang or the $100,000 found at the house were linked to the cyber theft. U.S. prosecutors have said that $2 million in cash is still missing from the heists.

The global ringleaders of the cyber theft are believed to be outside the United States though prosecutors declined to give details, citing the continuing investigation. Arrests in the case have also been made in Germany, according to the D?sseldorf prosecutor's office.

The hackers are alleged to have increased the available balance and withdrawal limits on prepaid MasterCard debit cards issued by Bank of Muscat of Oman, and National Bank of Ras Al Khaimah PSC (RAKBANK) of the United Arab Emirates.

They then distributed counterfeit debit cards to "cashers" around the world, enabling them to siphon millions of dollars from cash machines in a matter of hours, the prosecutors said.

Mothers Day Cards that Actually Depict Our Moms by Corey Hill ...

The reality of motherhood in America has little in common with the comfortable images portrayed in cards and on TV. A set of Mothers Day e-cards you can send for free shows moms that better reflect our diverse society.

posted May 10, 2013

Mamas Day Card-Bois

Cards, television commercials, and print ads all trumpet a value system in which mothers look and act in narrowly defined ways, a saccharine world where a hardworking mama?s only wants and needs are a bit of recognition and perhaps a spot of chocolate once a year.

Shen is hopeful that the cards will be downloaded 15,000 times this year; a worthy target for a message in need of wider audiences.

But the reality bears little resemblance to the myth. According to the 2010 census, only 20 percent of households in this country reflect the traditional nuclear family norm, with two heterosexual parents and two children who are their biological offspring.

There are some folks out there who think there?s more to motherhood, and they?re issuing their own set of mother?s day e-cards to get their message out there.

Forward Together, an organization based in Oakland, Calif., recently launched their third annual Mama?s Day Our Way campaign to change the narrative around motherhood and families. Mama?s Day Our Way features an e-card series and outreach campaign designed to shine a spotlight on mamas often left out of mainstream Mother?s Day celebrations, including low-income moms, young moms, immigrant moms, single moms, incarcerated moms, queer moms, and moms struggling with substance abuse issues.

?I am the daughter of Chinese immigrants, raising my own daughters along with my partner and our dog Pumpkin? says Eveline Shen, Executive Director of Forward Together. ?I know that if my kids ventured into the aisles at the neighborhood drugstore, they would not find images that reflect our multiracial, two-mom family.?

Radically readjusting perceptions isn?t without its share of hurdles. A May 2 article about the campaign in the New York Daily News generated a slew of negative comments that ranged from bafflement to outright anger.

?The message we want to send is that mamas need more than flowers or a box of chocolates once a year.?

Regardless of what Daily News commenters might say, the popular conception of motherhood no longer matches what?s out there. More than 80 percent of the 12.2 million single-parent families in the United States are headed by a mother. Mothers make up almost two-thirds of all women in prison. Nearly half of all lesbian women under the age of 50 are raising a child. And 1.7 million grandmothers are the primary caretaker for their grandchildren. Yet the dad-at-work mom at home with two kids is still the outdated notion held as standard.

And for all moms, regardless of where they come from, the challenges to raising a healthy family are legion. That?s why the work of Forward Together also seeks to address the structural problems facing moms throughout the country. One component of the campaign, for instance, involves putting pressure on members of the Senate to alter the comprehensive immigration reform package to protect the integrity of family units.

?The message we want to send is that mamas need more than flowers or a box of chocolates once a year,? Shen said. ?They need access to health care, a living wage, safety in their homes and on the streets, and self determination over their bodies.?

The e-cards appear to have struck a chord. With greater media attention than in years past, Shen is hopeful that the cards will be downloaded 15,000 times this year; a worthy target for a message in need of wider audiences.

Gold Copper and Crude Oil may trade negative on weak Euro zone data

Spot gold prices declined by 1.54 percent today on the back of strength in dollar index. Further rise in stock markets has led to decline in demand for safe haven. Further, SPDR gold trust holding is near to 4 years low acted as a negative factor. However, favourable German trade balance cushioned sharp fall in the prices. In the Indian markets, depreciation in the Rupee cushioned sharp fall in the prices.

Taking cues from decline in spot gold prices, spot silver prices decreased by 1.23 percent. Further, strength in DX added downside pressure. However, rise in risk appetite in the global market sentiments coupled with favorable economic data from Germany prevented sharp downside in the prices. In the Indian markets, depreciation in the Indian Rupee prevented sharp fall in the prices.

The base metals pack traded on a mixed note on the back of strength in DX along with upbeat global market sentiments. Favorable economic data from Germany along with decline in LME inventories cushioned sharp fall in the prices. In the Indian markets depreciation in the Indian Rupee cushioned sharp decline in the prices.

Copper, the leader of the base metals group increased by 0.20 percent today on the back of optimistic global market sentiments coupled with favorable economic data from Germany. Further, decline in US initial jobless claims supported prices to trade in green. Additionally, decline in LME inventories acted as positive factor. However, weak economic data from UK along with strength in DX capped sharp upside in the prices.

Nymex crude oil prices fell by 0.89 percent today on the back of strength in dollar index coupled with weak economic data from UK. Further, cut in the global demand for crude oil by EIA coupled with expectations of increase in OPEC output by more than 2 percent added downside pressure on the prices. However, upbeat global market sentiments along with rise in Imports and Exports data from Germany prevented sharp fall in the prices.

In the evening session, we expect precious metal, base metal and crude oil prices to trade on the negative note on the back of strength in DX coupled with weak economic data from UK. Further, investors will keep an eye on Fed chairman Bernanke speech which may keep prices under pressure. However, optimistic global market sentiments along with rise in German export and import data may cushion sharp downside in the prices.

HP Pavilion G6-2368CA

The HP Pavilion G6-2368CA ($499.99 list CAD) is an affordably priced and relatively well-equipped laptop that gives the average user interested in exploring Windows 8 a decent option. Overall, it's a fairly humble system that's bolstered by some useful perks, like a spacious hard drive and large display. Still, its AMD APU and its so-so performance keep it from achieving higher marks and, ultimately, undermines its overall effectiveness in the face of similarly-priced Intel-equipped competitors.

Design and Features
The Pavilion G6-2368CA's chassis measures 1.4 by 14.8 by 9.6 inches (HWD). Its weight of 5.08 pounds is reasonable for a 15.6-inch laptop and is slightly less bulky than the equally-sized HP Pavilion G6-2248CA (5.47 pounds) and Lenovo IdeaPad N581 (5.71 pounds). However, users on the market for a more featherweight system should at least briefly consider checking out an ultrabook along the likes of the Acer Aspire V5-571P-6627 (4.63 pounds). The Pavilion G6-2368CA's plastic body sports a glossy black finish that's subtly covered in glitter, in turn creating a look that can be described as "sparkly obsidian."

One place where glossiness benefits the Pavilion G6-2368CA is its 15.6-inch display, which dishes out rich colors and sharp images in an eye-pleasing fashion. Its maximum resolution of 1,366 by 768 is capable of supporting 720p content, a useful feature since the Pavilion G6-2368CA sports an integrated DVD burner. It doesn't support touch functionality, though that's an understandable omission at this price point. Comparatively, the Aspire V5-571P-6627 sports a touch capacitive touch screen, and accordingly costs $200 more. Music on the Pavilion G6-2368CA's Altec Lansing speakers often sounded muddled and there's noticeable distortion at higher levels.

Despite some mild flexing, the Pavilion G6-2368CA's chiclet-style keyboard nonetheless serves up a fairly comfortable typing experience. While it deserves credit for featuring a dedicated alpha numeric keypad, its lack of a backlight is an easily avoidable shortcoming that does the keyboard a disservice. The Pavilion G6-2368CA partially acquits itself with its comfortably textured touchpad, whose fluid Windows 8 gesture support helps make up for the absence of a touch screen.

The right side of the chassis features a USB 2.0 port and a DVD burner while left side houses a pair of USB 3.0 ports, the usual audio jacks, an SD/MMC card reader, and full-size VGA and HDMI outputs. While a pair of USB 3.0 ports is fairly generous, their black color makes them indistinguishable from the system's USB 2.0 port?save for a faint "SS" (super-speed) logo that HP uses in lieu of the standard blue color?which will likely trip up less discerning users.

The Pavilion G6-2368CA's 750GB, 5,400rpm HDD offers abundant storage for program files and media. Users that prefer working with a clean slate, however, must initially confront a sizable amount of preloaded software. The usual suspects are all present, like bloatware (Windows Live Essentials, desktop links to eBay and Netflix), trialware (Office 2010 Starter, 60-days of Norton Internet Security), and, of course, proprietary offerings from HP (HP Connected Music, Connected Remote, CoolSense, HP Games, and many, many more).

Performance
HP Pavilion G6-2368CA The Pavilion G6-2368CA's 2.7GHz AMD A6-4400M Accelerated Processor Unit (APU) bakes the system's CPU and AMD Radeon HD 7520G GPU onto the same die. Performance-wise, this duo is a mixed bag that yields competitive graphics processing and so-so performance in daily computing and media creation. The system's PCMark 7 score of 1,319 points landed at the bottom of the pile, falling short of Intel-equipped Asus VivoBook X202E-BH91T-CB (1,589 points) as well as the AMD-equipped HP Pavilion M6-1148CA (1,654 points). Its Cinebench R11.5 score of 1.13 points fared somewhat better, surpassing those of the Pavilion G6-2248CA and VivoBook X202E-BH91T-CB (1.01 points and 0.86 point, respectively), though it still fell considerably short of the class-leading Lenovo N581 (2.49 points).

Hobbyists that occasionally dabble in light multimedia creation will be well-served by the Pavilion G6-2368CA, though anything beyond that is out of the question. It completed our Handbrake video-encoding test in 3 minutes 8 seconds, outpacing the Asus VivoBook X202E-BH91T-CB (4:54) but more than twice as long as the Ideapad N581 (1:27). Similarly, it applied the dozen or so filters in Photoshop CS6 in 7 minutes 45 seconds, which was quicker than the Pavilion G6-2248CA (8:17) but short of the Aspire V5-571P-6627 (7:36) and, to a greater extent, the Ideapad N581 (5:34).

The Pavilion G6-2368CA's AMD Radeon HD 7520G handily outflanked the competition in 3DMark11 (1,263 points in Entry-level settings, 257 points in Extreme mode). While the Ideapad N581 managed to come within striking distance (1,234 points and 224 points, respectively), the Pavilion G6-2368CA's prowess for rendering 3D graphics is easily apparent. Still, its GPU isn't potent enough to distinguish itself from its peers in high-end gaming, as it also failed to crack the 30 frames per second (fps) playability barrier in both Aliens vs. Predator and Heaven.

HP Pavilion G6-2368CA

The Pavilion G6-2368CA's removable 4,200 mAh battery lasted 4 hours 3 minutes on our battery rundown test, which gives it an edge over the Asus X202E-BH91T-CB (3:55) It's a fairly average time for this class, though, so users planning on working for an entire day on a single charge should be prepared to shell out the extra cash for a spare battery.

With its affordable price tag and decent feature set, the HP Pavilion G6-2368CA gives average users a decent option for jumping into Windows 8 without breaking the bank. While its AMD processor offers so-so performance, it's partially remedied by useful perks like a spacious hard drive and large display. Casual users should give it a chance, but only after exploring other options first.

Amplats scales back S.African mining job cuts plan

By Helen Nyambura-Mwaura and Tiisetso Motsoeneng

RUSTENBURG, South Africa (Reuters) - Anglo American Platinum said on Friday it would cut 6,000 South African mining jobs, fewer than half the 14,000 initially proposed, as it tries to restore profits without provoking a backlash from the government and restive unions.

The world's top platinum producer, a unit of Anglo American, added in an announcement that it would also keep open one of four shafts slated for closure near the platinum belt city of Rustenburg.

Amplats aims to reduce its platinum production by close to 10 percent or 250,000 ounces this year, equal to 4.5 percent of global output. A further 100,000 ounces a year will be cut in the medium term, the company said.

Under an original plan announced at the start of this year, Amplats had wanted to cut output by 400,000 ounces annually. The reduced job losses are likely to soften the blow for the African National Congress (ANC) government, which faces an election next year, but it remains to be seen if it appeases the anger of powerful local unions.

"Everyone is surprised. We were not expecting any retrenchment at all. We can't allow this," Sphamandla Makhanya, a worker committee member at Amplats in Rustenburg told Reuters. "But before we do anything, we are going to have a mass meeting with the workers to decide what to do next."

For Amplats, reining in costs and cutting production enough to raise the global price of platinum, which is used for emissions-capping catalytic converters in motor vehicles, is crucial to getting back to profit.

The company said it would now aim to produce 2.2 to 2.4 million ounces a year, up from the 2.1 to 2.3 million ounces targeted in the original plan. The revisions should deliver 3.8 billion rand in savings by 2015.

Amplats' shares extended losses on the day to be almost 3 percent lower in mid-afternoon trade in Johannesburg.

Industry sources had told Reuters last week the final plan, hammered out after months of tough talks with the government, would demand as few as 5,000 redundancies.

The company will now have talks with unions and chief executive Chris Griffith said this process was expected to take an additional two to three months.

VOW TO FIGHT

Hours before the announcement, activists from the militant Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) in Rustenburg, where the main impact of the lay-offs will be felt, said they would not tolerate any job losses.

"Where will 6,000 people in this economy go? They will engage in criminality," Simon Hlongwane, a winch operator and AMCU branch secretary at Amplats' Thembelani mine, told Reuters. "We as AMCU stand ready to fight."

Social tensions are running high after violence rooted in a labour turf war between AMCU and the dominant National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) killed more than 50 people last year and provoked illegal strikes that hit production.

The unrest was a major reason why Amplats suffered its first loss last year.

With unemployment at more than 25 percent, the government has taken a strong line in the negotiations with Amplats.

The average South African mineworker has eight dependants, so the social and political consequences even of reduced lay-offs will be far reaching.

"If they cut my job, a lot of lives will be affected. I have a wife and two children, four of my brothers are also looking up to me," said one miner who gave only his first name as Gift.

AMCU has made good on strike promises in the past, including in January when it briefly closed several mines when the initial Amplats plan was unveiled. Its leaders said in Johannesburg on Thursday they would not back such wildcat strike action.

AMCU emerged as the dominant union in the platinum shafts last year after it poached tens of thousands of disgruntled members from the NUM, a political ally of the ruling African National Congress.

Imran Khan gains in Pakistan vote, Sharif remains frontrunner

By Michael Georgy

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Former Pakistan cricket star Imran Khan's party was enjoying a late surge of support on Friday, the eve of a landmark election, raising the prospect of a fragmented parliament that could lead to weeks of haggling to form a coalition government.

The failure of the major parties to capture a commanding lead raises the risk a weak government will emerge, clouding optimism over the first transition between civilian governments in a country that has been ruled by the military for more than half its history.

The party of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif looks set to win the most seats, returning Sharif to power 14 years after he was ousted in a military coup, imprisoned and later exiled.

But Khan could end up holding the balance of power if there is no clear-cut winner. In a sign of his popularity, 35,000 supporters turned up on Thursday at a rally in Islamabad that he didn't even attend.

The 60-year-old is in hospital after suffering injuries in a fall from a mechanical lift at a rally this week, which may also win him sympathy votes.

"While Khan was initially handicapped by the lack of party organization and the absence of a formal presence at the provincial level, he managed to overcome these challenges by establishing a network of volunteers who have campaigned frenetically and held massive public rallies in recent weeks," said Shamila Chaudhary, senior editor at Eurasia Group.

Khan, Pakistan's most well-known sportsmen who led a playboy lifestyle in his younger days, has emerged as a tough challenger to dynastic politicians who have relied heavily on a patronage system to win votes and are often accused of corruption.

Campaigning officially ended at midnight on Thursday. Election-related violence that has killed more than 110 people continued on the eve of the vote.

Five people were killed in bomb attacks on party offices on Friday, one in Quetta, capital of the southwestern province of Baluchistan, and the other in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

The al Qaeda-linked Pakistan Taliban, which regards the elections as un-Islamic, are responsible for the attacks that have made this the country's bloodiest election yet, and on Thursday they revealed plans for suicide bombings on polling day.

The militants have mostly targeted the more secular-leaning parties in the outgoing coalition led by the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), severely restricting their ability to campaign.

The bombers have largely spared the more conservative parties that have voiced doubts about Pakistan's participation in the U.S.-led campaign against militancy, including those of both Khan and Sharif.

Pakistanis say they will still vote, despite the bloodshed.

"I will vote for Imran Khan because he is a symbol of change," said student Waqas Ali. "We have tested other leaders several times but they are useless. I will go to the polling station despite serious threats of terrorism."

"FRACTURED MANDATE" WARNING

Khan, who appeals mostly to young, urban voters, has won support by calling for an end to corruption, a new political landscape and a halt to U.S. drone strikes on Pakistani soil.

Early opinion polls had put the share of votes for Khan's Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) party as low as single figures.

However, a survey released on Wednesday showed 24.98 percent of voters nationally planned to vote for his party, just a whisker behind Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N).

The Herald magazine poll showed Sharif's party remained the front-runner in Punjab, which, with the largest share of parliamentary seats, usually dictates the outcome of elections.

It also pointed to an upset for the PPP placing it in third place. Politics have long been dominated by the PML-N and the PPP, whose co-chairman is President Asif Ali Zardari, widower of assassinated former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

"The PPP didn't take care of the poor masses and always engages in corrupt practices whenever they come to power," said Sher Nabi, a banker from Peshawar.

"So we've decided to vote for the PTI candidate this time and test Imran Khan to see if proves as honest as he claims."

The army has vowed to stay out of politics but has never enjoyed warm relations with the PPP, which has a long record of opposition to military involvement in government.

Some analysts say the preferred election outcome for the army would be a parliament where no one party holds a majority, with the balance of power held by Khan. Analysts say the military see Khan as a useful foil to the main parties.

Sharif, who was prime minister twice in the 1990s, has said he would reconsider Pakistan's support for the U.S. war on Islamist militancy and promote free-market economics if he won.

He has warned that any coalition politics would paralyze policy-making.

"Whichever party wins, it needs to have a very clear majority for it to have the necessary policies to deal with the serious challenges the country faces, for the state to have a strong writ," he told the Dawn newspaper.

"A fractured mandate, a split mandate, would be worse than the last five years."

While the outgoing PPP made history by becoming the first civilian government to serve a full five-year term, it failed to tackle a dizzying array of problems.

The economy is feeble and may need another International Monetary Fund bailout to stay afloat. Chronic power cuts can last more than 10 hours a day in some places, crippling key industries like textiles and enraging ordinary people.

After months of campaigning, political parties may now become enmeshed in negotiations that might only delay the huge task of putting the nuclear-armed country on the right track.

"While a hung parliament is a possibility given the expected fractured outcome of polling, it is the least desirable outcome for all parties," said analyst Chaudhary.

"It would lead to an unstable minority government that could conceivably be led by PML-N, PPP, or even PTI, inevitably leading to another round of elections that, given physical and financial requirements, the full range of parties would rather avoid."

(AP) ? Adult Swim says it's turning Mike Tyson into a cartoon detective.

The network announced Friday a new animated series called "Mike Tyson Mysteries" that will feature the retired boxing champ.

On the show, a cartoon version of Tyson will solve wacky problems, assisted by a trusty associate: a foul-mouthed pet pigeon. The network said Tyson will voice the animated character, as well as make live-action appearances.

The show is targeted for next season, but no premiere date was specified.

Among other programming planned for its 2013-14 season, Adult Swim announced "Robot Chicken DC Comics Special II." It's a second spinoff of the cable network's long-running stop-motion sketch comedy series.

(AP) ? Roger Corman's campy B movies, children's shows like "Sesame Street" and "Inspector Gadget," and inspirational monologues by celebrities ? these are among the offerings on 30 channels that will soon require a paid monthly subscription on YouTube.

Although the world's largest video site has rented and sold movies and TV shows from major studios since late 2008, most people watch videos on YouTube for free.

It's the first time YouTube is introducing all-you-can-watch channels that require a monthly fee. The least expensive of the channels will cost 99 cents a month but the average price is around $2.99.

In the field of paid video content online, YouTube is playing catch up to services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, all of which have millions of paying customers.

But with a billion monthly visitors from around the globe, the Google-owned video service hopes to quickly add subscribers and add to the money it already makes from online advertising.

"This is just the beginning," said Malik Ducard, YouTube's director of content partnerships. The site plans to roll out a way for a broad number of partners to also launch pay channels on their own soon.

Corman, a producer and director whose influential cult classics like "Deathrace 2000" and "Piranha" earned him an honorary Oscar in 2009, said he's kept his 400-film library off of video streaming sites until now.

In an interview with The Associated Press, he said he turned down an offer from Hulu for about $5,000 to $6,000 per film several years ago, but sees promise in the YouTube offering. His channel, "Corman's Drive-in," will cost subscribers $3.99 per month for a rotating selection of 30 movies, refreshed with new interviews and clips from films that are in production. It is set to launch in June.

"I believed for many years that the future of motion picture distribution, particularly for the independents, is on the Internet," the 87-year-old said. "I think the time is now."

YouTube will keep slightly less than half of the revenue generated by the subscriptions.

Corman's wife and producing partner Julie Corman said they were taken aback at YouTube's potential after a clip of their 2010 movie "Sharktopus" went viral with 11 million views.

If even 1 percent of those viewers signed up for a subscription, it would amount to a healthy revenue stream, she said.

"The numbers are astonishing. We're waiting for the fireworks display," she said.

DHX Media Ltd., a Canadian company that owns the rights to 8,500 episodes of children's TV shows, is launching three paid YouTube channels, two for different age categories and one called "DHX Retro" that replays old programs such as "Inspector Gadget" and "Archie's Weird Mysteries."

It plans to launch in 10 countries and seven languages ? something that is much easier online than over traditional cable or satellite networks, according to DHX executive chairman Michael Hirsh.

"Clearing a channel across 10 countries would have taken a long time," Hirsh said. Doing it with YouTube takes just a "metaphorical flip of a switch."

As is the case with free videos on YouTube, the pay channels will be available for viewing on computers, mobile devices and Internet-connected TVs.

People who are accustomed to watching videos for free on YouTube are in for a slightly new experience. When viewers stumble upon a video requiring payment, they'll get a free preview up to 2 minutes long before being asked to subscribe.

Each channel comes with a 14-day free trial, but customers have to enter their credit card information through Google Wallet if they haven't already.

Several channels offer discounts on the monthly fee with an annual subscription, and some include features on top of access to videos.

Big Think, a New York-based maker of educational videos, will give subscribers who pay $2.99 a month access to videos of luminaries like Malcolm Gladwell, but also provide live question-and-answer sessions of an hour or more with experts.

Two new experts per month will be brought in to develop a series of 4-6 videos that are 2-3 minutes long. Each lesson is meant to distill advice that viewers can act upon immediately.

"This is e-learning for the YouTube audience," said Big Think president and co-founder Peter Hopkins. "We really had to take into account how to pack much more in and deliver on the promise of 'smarter, faster.' "

CMS Expo: Evanston Bound | Evanston Edge

It?s ?Destination Evanston? as more than three hundred web designers, developers, bloggers and web focused thought leaders prepare to convene in Evanston for the seventh CMS Expo Learning & Business Conference ? Tuesday, May 14th through Thursday, May 16th at the Hilton Orrington Hotel.

CMS stands for ?Content Management System? and refers to computer software programs, or ?platforms?, that allow users to publish and edit content, as well as manage workflow, on websites.

Joomla, Drupal and Jahia may sound like intergalactic creatures from a Star Wars movie, but in fact, are platforms of keen interest to the international group arriving in Evanston in mid-May. Users of these platforms and others will be immersing themselves in three days of sessions ? all geared to the different aspects of website creation and optimization.

Linda and John Coonen founded the CMS Expo in 2008, and have been the event?s organizers and hosts from the beginning. Linda says that the conference is unique because everyone is a participant. ?We have a very interactive model where our speakers are there to say ?this is how we?ve done it ? now tell us how you?ve done it?,? she explains. ?It?s always a two-way exchange with everyone bringing something to the table.?

2013 CMS Expo

The Start of Something Big

The CMS Expo Learning & Business Conference happened almost by accident, according to John. In 2007, he was using the Joomla platform to build websites for various non-profit ventures. Since Joomla is free to the public (known as open source software), and, at that time, lacked any ?how-to? instructions or ?user manual?, John reached out to fellow participants on a Joomla message board ? hoping to get a few users together to share tips and shortcuts.

To his surprise, twenty-three people showed up at the first meeting ? and, in the months that followed, fifty to sixty people were gathering Downtown Evanston to share Joomla strategies.

Linda got involved to help create a structure for the meet-ups, and, by 2008, the group decided to hold a one-day Joomla conference.

The Coonens were astounded by the response. Over two hundred and fifty people from five continents registered for the first CMS Expo. ?I couldn?t believe someone was willing to come all the way from Costa Rica for a one day event,? Linda says. ?We never in our wildest dreams saw this coming.?

?It was truly a ?build it and they will come? experience,? John explains. ?There was such a hunger for this information.?

From the early user group meetings organized by the Coonens to the current internationally renowned CMS Expo ? Chicago-based Arc Technology Group has been a steadfast sponsor. ?We are excited, every year, to meet people who are leaders in the CMS world,? says Robert Jacobi, President of Arc. ?We always look forward to learning how they?re implementing the latest technology.?

Topics

Over the years, the Expo has expanded beyond just Joomla to include platforms such as Drupal, WordPress, Jahia, SageFrame and OpenText. While past CMS Expos have focused on how to navigate the software itself, this year?s conference will be more focused on content, according to Linda. ?With more user groups out there, we?re starting to go beyond the tools,? she explains. ?Now we?re focused on helping our attendees make the most of content and work flow.?

According to John, the CMS Expo is evolving into a more business-oriented conference ? with sessions that include topics such as: Search Engine Optimization (SEO); Building site traffic; Mid-tier business survival in an economic downturn; and the COPE (Create Once/Publish Everywhere) Theory for re-purposing content.

The Coonens do a lot of scouting for new and exciting speakers to add to the mix at the Expo. ?We bring in presenters who are cutting edge and can give our attendees an idea of what?s coming down the pike,? John explains. ?We like to feature speakers who are pushing the envelope.?

A visit to the CMS Expo website provides a rundown of speakers on this year?s docket, including: Lisa Sabin-Wilson, co-owner of WebDevStudios and author of WordPress For Dummies; Paul Caluori, Global Director, Digital Services for the Associated Press; and Liz Strauss, CEO of the SOBcon Business Conference who was recently named to Huff Post?s ?Top Ten Influencers Alive? list.

Shining A Light On Evanston

The Coonens, who live in the Northwest suburbs, have appreciated having Evanston as their base for CMS Expos since 2009. ?Evanston has made us feel very welcome from the start,? Linda says. ?Our attendees can get a taste of the city without all the craziness of Downtown Chicago ? and it?s easy because we can walk everywhere.?

Each year, Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl addresses the group at the CMS Expo?s ?welcome party? followed by a night on the town ? with attendees going from establishment to establishment for food, drink and music. ?It means a lot that the mayor comes out and addresses our group,? John says. ?We try to shine a light on Evanston, and the City, in turn, shines a light on us.?

Mayor Tisdahl says she?s happy that Evanston is, once again, playing host to the conference. ?I?m delighted that the CMS Expo will be back in town, and that it continues to grow,? Mayor Tisdahl says. ?We welcome tech firms to Evanston.?

According to the Coonens, the Hilton Orrington Hotel has been an important part of their success ? catering to restricted diets with ease and making sure everyone is well satisfied. ?The Hilton Orrington staff just goes above and beyond providing amazing service and the healthiest, most delicious food,? Linda says. ?Our attendees just can?t say enough good things about the whole Hilton Orrington experience.?

Empowering For Participants

Linda describes the CMS Expo Learning & Business Conference as ?win-win? ? designed to empower everyone who attends. ?One woman came to the Expo to learn how to start her own web business,? Linda says. ?Now she?s selling bridal veils online.?

John says the CMS Expo has become a place to, not only, learn, but to get new business and discover new talent as well. ?The networking has become as important as the educational piece,? he says. ?Drupal and Joomla guys on opposite sides of the room are coming together to make new business starts by the end of the conference.?

Kim Testa, Director at The Bureau of Internet Accessibility in Providence, RI, especially appreciates the networking. ?Several people I?ve met at the Expo have become not only new friends, but new customers,? she explains.

Many of the international attendees come for the whole month of May because of the Expo, and use Chicago as their base to conduct U.S. business, according to Linda. ?People attend from France, India, Nigeria ? from all over the world,? she says. ?It helps to create an electric atmosphere at the conference.?

In summing up the CMS Expo Learning & Business Conference, John says it?s about coming together to share new ideas and play off each other?s strengths. ?If you have a problem, we can help you solve it,? he says. ?The message of this Expo is that you can do it?it?s possible?let us show you how.?

'Charlie Brown' actor to be sentenced for stalking

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? The man who was the voice of Charlie Brown in several "Peanuts" television shows faces possible prison time for stalking and threatening his former girlfriend and a plastic surgeon who had given her a breast enhancement.

Peter Robbins is scheduled to appear in San Diego Superior Court on Wednesday for sentencing. He pleaded guilty last month.

Prosecutors say the 56-year-old called his former girlfriend up to 37 times in a 24-hour period, saying he would kill her and her son if she did not give back his dog and car. They say Robbins repeatedly called the plastic surgeon to demand a refund for the breast enhancement.

The Oceanside resident is best known for his portrayal of Charlie Brown on the TV special "A Charlie Brown Christmas."

Senator says background check bill will pass

Manchin (AP/File)

NEW YORK?West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin said Tuesday he's optimistic that a revised bipartisan bill to expand background checks for gun sales will pass the Senate.

"We really need five votes," Manchin, a Democrat, said during an interview at the Atlantic's New York Ideas Festival. The original bill, which Manchin co-sponsored with Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, failed in a 54-46 Senate vote last month.

A new bill, Manchin said, is in the works. "Oh, it's coming back," he said.

Manchin said he needs to educate law-abiding gun owners who support the legislation but don't trust the government.

"The big problem is that they're afraid that this is the first step because they've seen overreach," he said.

The background check bill, Manchin said, not only protects Second Amendment rights, but expands them.

Other detractors said the bill might infringe on gun transfers between family members. "It doesn't at all," Manchin said.

The Democratic senator also scoffed at talk of the "culture war" discussed at the National Rifle Association convention in Houston over the weekend as cage-rattling rhetoric.

"What you saw was the division that's going on across the country," Manchin, a gun owner and member of the NRA, said. "I don't know why we can't sit and talk and work together as Americans."

Manchin said the school shootings Newtown, Conn., affected his views.

"If Newtown didn't change you, nothing will," Manchin said. "It made you think, 'Can we do something a little better?'"

Twenty-six people, including 20 children, were killed in the Dec. 14, 2012, shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Manchin added: "None of those families came to my office and asked to repeal the Second Amendment." They asked him to make it harder for people who are bent on killing to get guns.

"That was a small ask," he said.
