'Masters of Sex' takes explicit look at sexuality

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? There's so much sex depicted on a new cable TV series about researchers Masters and Johnson that filming it became ho-hum for star Michael Sheen.

"I never thought I would get used to having a naked woman in front of me masturbating ... but I actually broke that barrier on the show," Sheen, who plays researcher William Masters, said Tuesday.

He plays opposite Lizzy Caplan as co-researcher and future wife Virginia Johnson in Showtime's "Masters of Sex," an explicit depiction of the pair and their groundbreaking mid-20th century scientific investigation of human sexuality.

The series, based on Thomas Maier's 2009 nonfiction book, debuts Sept. 29 on Showtime. Johnson died last week at age 88 in St. Louis. She was divorced from Masters, who died in 2001.

Sheen, whose film credits include "The Queen," said the story remains pertinent because the same "problems of intimacy" and making connections with people apply today.

During a Q&A session with the Television Critics Association, the difficulty of talking about sex publicly became apparent. One reporter asked the cast and producers how the series can include humor without appearing to titter at sexuality.

"We just had a slightly inappropriate look into your sex life. We all thank you for that," Sheen replied, drolly.

Caplan (TV's "True Blood," ''New Girl") said the researchers' work at Washington University in St. Louis and later at their own institute was especially important for women, allowing them to understand and accept their sexuality as healthy.

"Before Masters and Johnson, no one was telling women that. It was always their own fault," Caplan said. "And that's some (baloney)."

The series embellished some characters but "stuck to the facts very carefully," said producer Michelle Ashford. "Certainly (with) the research, we fudged none of that."

Masters and Johnson became big celebrities who were the topic of late-night talk show hosts and on the cover of news magazines. Their work drew some criticism, especially in an era when sex was seldom discussed in public and certainly not in detail.

The cast, asked whether filming sex scenes proved embarrassing, said there was a painstaking effort to protect the actors by making the production "comfortable and safe," Sheen said.

Cast member Teddy Sears recalled director John Madden saying, "I want to protect your modesty," then mimicked the British Madden giving a stage direction: "Grab her bum."

Doing repeated takes of one clinical sex scene turned out to be "decidedly unsexy after a while," Sears said.

The panelists, including executive producer Sarah Timberman, said they were not in touch with Johnson because they'd wanted to respect her privacy.

"She wanted to live out her the last few years of her life not in the limelight," Caplan said.

Johnson "bared her soul in the book (by Maier) and then was done with that," said producer Ashford.

Blake Landau: How to Engage on Twitter: Four Tips From HBO's Newsroom

Get Business Newsletters:

The Newsroom script carries the wit and sophistication of a really well-written tweet. A media junkie myself I've savored each episode of this deliciously wry series.

Now with the first two episodes of season two behind us it's clear Aaron Sorkin -- also the writer of The Social Network -- decided to move Newsroom in a more social direction.

Citizen journalism has taken a front seat in the world of breaking news and we're starting to see this explored in the script. Finally, traditional media morphs into more multi-faceted reporting on Newsroom.

To celebrate the increasingly social Newsroom, I've captured a handful of important Twitter-how to's gleaned from the series. Here are my top four lessons on how to engage on Twitter.

#1 Love It or Leave It

If you're a traditional newscaster who hates social, don't ruin the party for everyone. With more than 500 million users, there's no denying the fact that Twitter is becoming an increasingly more important part of today's news landscape. This year during the Boston Marathon tragedy, the Boston Police used Twitter to announce the suspect was in custody.

But not everyone on Newsroom shows excitement about Twitter. In episode two, "The Genoa Tip," ACN anchor Elliott Hirsch (David Harbour) is disgusted that Charlie (Sam Waterston) wants to scroll Twitter feeds across the bottom of the screen during his show.

There is no doubt Twitter is changing how we get our news. It's also making it possible for users to connect and react to that news in real-time. Twitter is only gaining popularity as a tool to get raw quick information. If you're still a naysayer espousing the evil of social, better to just skip the tool and avoid talking about it out loud.

#2 Take A Stance

A handful of fake Newsroom character Twitter accounts have surfaced. Art imitates life. The audience wants to know more from media voices other than what's written on the news prompt. They're looking for meaning and critique.

Twitter is a place to share news but it's also a place to share an opinion. Think about it: If you don't share your opinion on Twitter --or anything personal -- what's the difference between your Twitter account and a news aggregator written by a bot? Caring and explaining why makes us care more about you as a twitter head.

#3Don't Sell Yourself Out For Short Term Gains

Finance anchor Sloan Sabbith (Olivia Munn) accompanies ACN staff member Maggie (Alison Pill) to a laundromat in Queens to track down Erica, who shared Maggie's Sex and the City tour bus melt down with the world. Sloan offers to send Erica's cheesy blog to 450,000 Twitter followers in exchange for taking down the video of Maggie.

While Erica shakes on it, she then writes on her blog about the celebrity encounter rather than pulling the video. Sloan shouldn't have volunteered to use her Twitter account to promote something she didn't believe in just for the sake of a barter. For the most part anytime a blogger or a brand asks you to tweet something (and it seems disingenuous) it takes away from your credibility -- and it's not worth whatever shiny object you're offered at the time.

#4 Use Twitter to Mine Data

Twitter provides documentation and data. In the episode "Willie Pete" (season two episode three) Jerry Dantana (Hamish Linklater) turns to social media to find out if a village in Pakistan was attacked by nerve gas while trying to get Americans out.

A translator faxes translated tweets into the newsroom about unmarked helicopters and burned bodies. If you're a journalist or the new intern at work, Twitter is a place to search for information -- no matter the data. Twitter can always be included in your search for information, and it's becoming an increasingly important and credible source.

Those are my tips. Share with me what your favorite Newsroom moments are in the comments section below.

German consumer confidence heads higher

BERLIN (AP) ? German consumer confidence is continuing to rise on the back of a strong labor market and the prospect of more robust economic growth, a survey showed Tuesday.

The GfK research institute said its forward-looking consumer climate index rose to 7 points for August from 6.8 in July. That's the highest level since September 2007, when the index hit 7.3 points.

"The continued stability of employment prospects and a moderate rate of inflation caused optimism to rise," the GfK said.

Recent economic data have bolstered expectations that the German economy, Europe's biggest, is on track to rebound from a lackluster performance over the winter.

Germany's unemployment rate was 6.6 percent in June, which contrasts sharply with other countries that use the euro, such as Greece and Spain, where the jobless rate is over 25 percent.

Germany's Federal Statistical Office said the country's annual inflation rate ticked up to 1.9 percent in July from 1.8 percent the previous month. It pointed to a 5.7 percent increase in food prices and a 2.8 percent rise in energy costs.

Second known case of patient developing synesthesia after brain injury

[unable to retrieve full-text content]A Toronto man is only the second known person to have acquired synesthesia as a result of a brain injury, in this case a stroke. About nine months after suffering a stroke, the patient noticed that words written in a certain shade of blue evoked a strong feeling of disgust. Yellow was only slightly better. Raspberries, which he never used to eat very often, now tasted like blue -- and blue tasted like raspberries.

Veteran Producer Don Mischer to Direct Chinese Awards Show

Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images

Don Mischer.

He?s produced or directed three Academy Award shows, two Olympics opening ceremonies, several Super Bowl halftime shows and the Obama Inaugural Celebration in Washington, D.C., in 2009. Now he?s going to China -- and he's hoping to bring some of Hollywood with him.

Veteran live-show producer Don Mischer has signed on to oversee a revamp of China?s Huading Awards, a vote-based show that honors top Chinese talent in athletics and entertainment.

PHOTOS:?China Box Office: 10 Highest-Grossing Movies of All Time

Established in 2007 by Beijing-based media company Global Talents Media Group, the Huading Awards are held several times throughout the year at various Chinese locations, feting stars in all fields. Mischer is currently prepping an event to be held in Macau in October, which will celebrate talent from film, TV, dance and music, according to an interview he gave to the Wall Street Journal blog China Real Time Report. Mischer said he then plans to work with Global Talents to bring the Huading show to Los Angeles in May 2014.

One of Hollywood?s most experienced hands at producing televised gala events, Mischer?said it was the freedom of the China project that attracted him.

?Most television has become kind of bottom-line business, where it's profits and commercials that make the difference,? he told the Journal. ?Now I have an opportunity to work on a project I can take real pride in.?

He also said he expects to lure some Hollywood talent over for the Macau show but added that it?s too early to reveal prospective or planned appearances.

STORY:?Hollywood Studios Haven't Been Paid by China in Months (Exclusive)

?Everyone -- movie stars and musical artists -- in L.A. that I work with wants to establish a connection with their fans in China,? Mischer said. ?You now find a lot of American films have premieres in China, like Iron Man, even before we can watch them in America.?

On July 12 in Beijing, Global Talents unveiled details of its plans to upgrade the awards show, saying it intends to bring the Huading Awards to South Korea, Singapore, the U.K., Germany, France, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, South Africa, Switzerland, Spain, Brazil, Italy and Japan over the course of the next decade.

It won?t be Mischer?s first time working in the booming Chinese entertainment sector. In 1997, he produced the handover ceremony celebrating the official return of Hong Kong to China from British colonial rule -- a highly significant occasion for the Chinese government, and a credit that no doubt puts the producer in good stead with the country?s ruling elite.

Live shows and spectacles have garnered a wildly uneven reputation in China. The Spring Festival gala produced by CCTV during the Chinese Lunar New Year usually runs upwards of four hours. It's the most watched event on the Chinese broadcasting calendar, but in recent years many viewers have taken to social media to complain of being bored.

The 2008 Beijing Olympics ceremony, meanwhile, is regarded globally as one of the most awe-inspiring live events ever mounted.

Professional admiration appears to also be part of Mischer?s eastward endeavor. ?I don?t think there would ever be an opening ceremony done again that would have the skill and the precision that the Beijing 2008 opening ceremony had,? he said. ?Beijing was really committed to this.?

Mideast Peace Talks Resume in Washington

[image]European Pressphoto Agency

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, left, with former U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Martin Indyk, right, whom the Obama administration named as a special envoy to facilitate the day-to-day dialogue between the Israelis and Palestinians.

WASHINGTON?The first direct peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians in nearly three years began Monday night in Washington, initiating a diplomatic process the two sides have committed to follow for at least nine months.

The round, set to conclude Tuesday, was expected to look at the timing and location for future negotiations, U.S. and Arab officials said, rather than the contentious issues that have frustrated American diplomats for decades. These include the borders of a future Palestinian state, security, and the status of refugees who were displaced by the creation of Israel and the 1967 war.

The relaunch of talks highlighted the effort the second Obama administration, and Secretary of State John Kerry in particular, has placed on forging an independent Palestinian state. U.S. officials have argued to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas that a peace treaty could help stabilize a Middle East shaken by conflicts in Egypt, Syria and Iraq.

"During my March visit to the region, I experienced firsthand the profound desire for peace among both Israelis and Palestinians, which reinforced my belief that peace is both possible and necessary," President Barack Obama said in a statement released Monday ahead of the talks. "The most difficult work of these negotiations is ahead."

To support the process, the Obama administration on Monday named Martin Indyk, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel, as a special envoy to facilitate the day-to-day dialogue between the Israelis and Palestinians. Most of this diplomacy is expected to shift back to the Middle East after Tuesday, said U.S. and Arab officials involved in the talks. "Perhaps, Mr. Secretary, through your efforts?this time we'll actually make it," Mr. Indyk said Monday at a news conference with Mr. Kerry at the State Department.

Mideast diplomats and analysts remained cautious about any major breakthrough being achieved in the coming months.

The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Both sides say they want peace, but both sides also blame the other for evading a resolution.

See some key dates in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

They cited the fractious domestic political environments faced by both Mr. Netanyahu and Mr. Abbas within their own governments and societies. The growing instability of Israel's neighbors, particularly Syria and Egypt, also could constrain Mr. Netanyahu's ability to make territorial concessions, they said.

"I don't see the two sides having any political incentives right now" to take chances, said Ghaith al-Omari of the American Task Force on Palestine, an advocacy group that supports a two-state solution. "But they don't want to say 'no' to talks, when Kerry is seen as doing the right thing."

The resumption of the peace process on Monday resulted from Mr. Kerry's six trips to the Mideast since taking up his post in February. During that time, he held separate marathon negotiating sessions with both Mr. Netanyahu and Mr. Abbas, and stressed that time could be running out for ending their conflict through the creation of a Palestinian state.

Mr. Netanyahu, to support the process, agreed on Sunday to release more than 100 Palestinian prisoners, most of whom were jailed before the formal Arab-Israeli peace process began in the early 1990s. The Palestinians, in turn, have pledged not to take steps in the coming months to seek statehood through the United Nations General Assembly or other international bodies, according to U.S. and Arab officials.

Mr. Netanyahu, however, didn't concede to Mr. Abbas's two main demands to restart the peace process, according to U.S. officials. These included a complete freeze of Jewish construction in disputed territories and the recognition that Israel's borders before the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, with land-swapping where necessary, would form the baseline for the negotiations.

U.S. officials said, however, that the Israelis are expected to restrain any significant building in the West Bank and East Jerusalem while the talks are under way.

Mr. Kerry held short meetings Monday night with the Palestinian and Israeli delegations before a dinner at the State Department commemorating Iftar, the breaking of fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, a former foreign minister, is leading the Israeli side, facing the chief Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat.

"These first talks are largely symbolic," said an Arab official briefed on the talks. "The real negotiations will take place back in the region."

Mr. Kerry on Monday deputized Mr. Indyk to take charge of the day-to-day supervision of the peace process. The decision, in part, is designed to free the secretary of state to spend more time focusing on Asia and the crises afflicting Egypt and Syria, said U.S. officials. Mr. Indyk, as a facilitator, isn't expected to sit in on all the negotiations.

Mr. Indyk was a top official working on the Mideast during the Clinton administration, including stints at the White House and State Department. He has spent much of the past decade writing and analyzing the Mideast's conflict as a vice president at the Brookings Institution in Washington.

Some Arab officials said they were wary of Mr. Kerry stepping back too much from the peace process. They said top American leadership is needed to force concessions from both sides.

Jack Lew Tries, Fails to Rewrite Debt Ceiling History

28 Jul 2013, 11:49 AM PDT post a comment

Republicans did not threaten default. A handful of conservative Republicans--notably, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN)--suggested that hitting the debt ceiling would be acceptable because it would not?mean the U.S. would have to default, i.e. that the Treasury could meet the government's obligations while holding back some discretionary spending. Regardless, that view was never the majority or official bargaining position.

As Lew well knows, the sticking point during the 2011 negotiations was the president's insistence on tax hikes. He scuttled a "grand bargain" on deficit reduction by demanding $400 billion in tax hikes at the last moment, leading to the Budget Control Act, which included the sequester (about which the Obama White House has never ceased to complain, but which was its own idea, and which is helping decrease the deficit.)

Lew was such a bad actor during those talks that Republicans specifically asked the White House to exclude him from negotiations. "I don't need somebody who just knows how to say no," Speaker of the House John Boehner said. Breitbart News' Mike Flynn predicted in January that Lew's nomination was a sign that the White House would refuse to compromise with Republicans. Indeed Lew refuses even to negotiate.

The Obama administration is once again trying to force through tax hikes and spending increases by accusing Republicans, preemptively, of wishing the country to go into default. It has repeatedly rejected Republican attempts to ensure that debt ceiling talks do not have that consequence. So it is Obama, and Lew, who are actually using default as a threat. Lew's failed attempt at rewriting history is clearly part of that strategy.

Syrian troops capture key Homs neighborhood

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? Syria's beleaguered opposition forces suffered another blow Monday as government troops captured a key district in the embattled city of Homs that has been a rebel stronghold since the beginning of the country's uprising.

The capture of Khaldiyeh is a setback for the rebels in the strategic central heartland, bringing President Bashar Assad's regime closer to its goal of capturing all of Homs, Syria's third largest city ? including neighborhoods in its Old City that the rebels have held for more than a year.

The opposition acknowledged the loss of Khaldiyeh, although some activists said there were still scattered clashes in northern sectors of the district where rebels were still putting up a fight. A senior member of the Western-backed Syria National Coalition said the regime's gains in Homs are not irreversible.

"It will be difficult, but not impossible to gain back what we've lost in Homs," said Hadi Bahra, a member of the Coalition's political committee.

"Today they (Assad's forces) gain something and the day after tomorrow we take it back," he told The Associated Press from Saudi Arabia.

Syrian TV aired live footage from the neighborhood, showing troops roaming deserted streets and waving flags in front of shell-scarred buildings. Two opposition activists in the area who could normally be contacted via Skype were offline Monday.

State news agency SANA quoted an unnamed army commander saying the fall of Khaldiyeh would significantly boost army operations aimed at dislodging rebels from central areas of Homs. Khaldiyeh is important because it links other rebel-held districts in the heart of the city through a network of tunnels the rebel dug out to ferry weapons and other supplies, the commander said.

A month ago, the government launched a sweeping offensive to retake rebel-held areas of Homs and even if small pockets of resistance remain, its capture would be the second major setback to rebels in central Syria in as many months.

In early June, regime forces captured the strategic town of Qusair in Homs province near the border with Lebanon. Troops have also captured the town of Talkalakh, another border town in the province.

The province of Homs is Syria's largest, and runs from the Lebanese frontier in the west all the way to the border with Iraq and Jordan in the east. The city of Homs serves as a crossroads between the main highway from Damascus to the north and the road west, to the coastal region, which is a stronghold of Assad's Alawite sect.

Khaldiyeh had a population of about 80,000 but only some 2,000 have remained there as residents fled the violence, activists say. The heavy fighting over the past two years has caused extensive damage, with some buildings reduced to rubble.

In a report on Monday, Syrian state TV said "the Syrian army has restored security and stability in the whole neighborhood of Khaldiyeh in Homs."

A Syrian TV reporter embedded with troops in the area gave a live report standing in front of damaged buildings. He interviewed an army officer who said the troops fought a tough battle against rebels who mined buildings and fought from underground tunnels.

"As of this morning, our armed forces in cooperation with the (pro-government paramilitary) National Defense Forces have taken control of Khaldiyeh and are now cleansing the neighborhood," said the officer, surrounded by about a dozen soldiers and plainclothes security agents.

"The fate of terrorists will be under our feet," he said, claiming that all Homs will be soon "cleansed" of rebels.

The Observatory has said that government troops are backed by members of Lebanon's Hezbollah group.

Hezbollah, which did not acknowledge whether its members are fighting in Khaldiyeh, played a major role in a battle last month in Qusair, outside Homs, and lost scores of men there.

Observatory director Rami Abdul-Rahman said regime forces have captured most of the neighborhood apart from some fighting on its southern areas.

Another opposition activist, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said the battle in Khaldiyeh "is almost over." He acknowledged that troops are almost in full control of the area.

In the northern city of Aleppo, several rebel factions including the al-Qaida-linked Jabhat al-Nusra, or Nusra Front, attacked army posts in two neighborhoods in a an offensive titled "amputating infidels" the Observatory said.

It said rebels captured the neighborhood of Dahret Abed Rabbo and several buildings in Lairamoun there, and that eight government soldiers were killed.

Rebels have been on the offensive in Aleppo province and captured last week the strategic town of Khan el-Assal. Activists and state media said score of troops were killed there after their capture. The Western-backed Syrian National Council condemned the killings.

In the southern region of Quneitra, on the edge of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, government troops captured the town of Mashara on Sunday night after intense fighting, the Observatory said.

That was true when he was a member of Congress, where he sometimes spoke from the House floor in a verbal conflagration on the order of Sherman blazing through Atlanta. It was true when he entered the race for New York mayor two years after resigning from Congress in disgrace ? the titters of disbelief still audible in the press gallery. And it remains true today, when he has not pointedly not listened to his former leader in the House, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, who captured the feeling of many Americans in telling Mr. Weiner to "get a clue" and drop out of the mayoral race.

At this point, Weiner's refusal to give up his bid to be mayor of New York seems to have more than a whiff of sheer stubbornness. This, after all, is the man who continued the very behavior that forced him to resign from Congress ? trading raunchy and racy online posts with single women ? for more than a year after he left Washington. And that revelation, uncovered Tuesday, is what has brought us all to this moment of midsummer political tragicomedy.

Yet why should Weiner abandon his bid to become the next mayor of New York, really?

From the outside, there is no shortage of reasons. Bringing one of America's great cities into disrepute by association is only the most obvious. Weiner's campaign manager, Danny Kadem, apparently felt enough was enough, resigning his post this weekend.

But his resignation could point to some of the very reasons why Weiner has been so determined to continue his campaign ? and why it's not unthinkable that he could still be in the race when the election is held on Nov. 5.

Surmising why Mr. Kadem might have quit, Fordham University political scientist Joseph Mercurio suggested to Bloomberg news: "I suspect there's been a tremendous pressure on Kedem from labor campaigns and others who oppose Weiner, and I'm sure Kedem's interested in remaining in this business, and he can't take the pressure and he's leaving."

Ten charts: Why Wall Street loves Amazon and hates Apple

chart_ws_stock_appleinc_201372934043_240xaFORTUNE -- In November, the last time we compared Apple's (AAPL) and Amazon's (AMZN)?price-to-earnings ratios -- the simplest and most widely used metric to gauge the relative ?value of a pair of stocks -- ?Apple's trailing PE was 13 and Amazon's was 2,767.

We haven't been able to repeat the exercise because while Apple PE has drifted with its stock price to between 10 and 11, Amazon's trailing PE has reached, as Buzz Lightyear might put it, infinity and beyond. (Or, as the stock charts politely have it, NA.)

That's because Amazon, which reported its June earnings on Friday, hasn't turned a profit for three quarters in a row -- a performance that Wall Street rewarded by pushing its stock to an all-time-high of $312.01.

It will come as no surprise to readers here that Apple, which posted record fiscal Q3 sales (but lower earnings) three days earlier, couldn't catch more than a one-day break on the stock market.

That's because as far as Wall Street is concerned, Apple and Amazon are in completely different businesses. As a regular on Investor Village's AAPL Sanity board put it last week:

"The Street sees Amazon as the world's biggest (online) global retailer with almost limitless growth.?[It] sees Apple as a (mobile) device maker that because it is wholly dependent on its ability to innovate nonstop, expand its (ultimately saturated) markets while fighting off competition and controlling its very unstable supply chain, has limited growth."

To underscore just how much Wall Street loves Amazon and hates Apple, the reader who posts as "Merckel" has submitted for your consideration nine bar graphs and a five-year sales chart:

Party in Tunisian ruling coalition demands new government

By Tarek Amara

TUNIS (Reuters) - Pro- and anti-government demonstrators clashed in two Tunisian cities on Monday, witnesses said, as tensions rose over opposition efforts to oust the Islamist-led government.

Angry opposition protesters tried to storm municipal offices in Sidi Bouzid and stop employees there from working, residents said, sparking clashes between them and supporters of the Islamist Ennahda party, which leads the transitional government.

The army intervened to protect the offices and police fired tear gas, but residents said thousands of demonstrators were still gathering in the southern city, the cradle of the revolt that overthrew President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011.

"Now many of the protesters are coming in carrying batons and it looks like the situation is going to escalate because both sides are standing firm," one resident, Mahdi al-Hurshani, told Reuters by telephone.

Tunisians fear they may be plunging into one of the worst crises in their political transition since Ben Ali was forced to flee by an uprising that inspired unrest across the Arab world.

Opposition leaders say they might set up a rival "salvation government", an idea they will discuss later on Monday.

The secular opposition, angered by the second assassination in its ranks in six months and emboldened by the Egyptian army's ousting of an Islamist president this month, is now rejecting all concessions and reconciliation efforts by the government.

The unrest has erupted just weeks before the transitional Constituent Assembly was set to complete a draft of a new constitution. The opposition now demands that the 217-member body be dissolved. Seventy lawmakers have left it and set up a sit-in outside the Assembly offices in Tunis's Bardo square.

Cabinet ministers will meet on Monday to discuss the growing political crisis, a government official said, and a message from the prime minister to the nation is expected soon.

In Bardo square, rival protesters threw rocks at each other and police intervened to disperse them. Opposition sources said security forces beat one of the 70 lawmakers who had quit the Constituent Assembly. He was taken to hospital.

"The prime minister will be held accountable for any drop of blood spilled in the Bardo sit-in," opposition figure Manji Rahawi said.

Tunisia's powerful labour unions were also set to meet on Monday to discuss more strike action. On Friday, the unions shut down much of the country for a strike to mourn leftist politician Mohamed Brahmi who was assassinated last week.

The government says Brahmi's assailants used the same weapon that killed another secular leader, Chokri Belaid, on February 6.

Its critics say it has not done enough to investigate or stop the attacks it has blamed on hardline Salafist militants.

Many joining the swelling street protests cite anger with the instability in Tunisia as well as economic stagnation.

Others are frustrated that a constitution, promised one year after the 2011 uprising, has yet to be completed and are suspicious of the Islamist-led transitional government.

College football preview: TU, OU, OSU players with something to prove

By BILL HAISTEN World Sports Writer on Jul 28, 2013, at 2:34 AM??Updated on 7/28/13 at 7:48 AM

Trey Metoyer, So., WR

The sophomore wide receiver had large expectations entering 2012, but ended with only 17 catches for 148 yards. His production grinded to a halt in the season's final 10 games, when the former Rivals five-star recruit only had seven receptions. OU coach Bob Stoops expects this season to be different. "Trey definitely feels a lot more comfortable in what he needs to do, what we're asking him to do. I feel like he's exhibited more confidence in doing that. We believe he has a chance to have a really big year."

- ERIC BAILEY, World Sports Writer

Justin Gilbert, Sr., CB

Gilbert's junior season could have been a farewell tour.

The cornerback capped his sophomore season by being named defensive MVP of the Fiesta Bowl. He appeared poised for the kind of 2012 season that would result in him leaving school early for the NFL.

Instead, Gilbert endured an interceptionless season and decided to return to Stillwater for a do-over. So far, so good. He had two interceptions in the spring game.

"Gilbert needs to play well this year," coach Mike Gundy said at the Big 12 Media Days. "Justin didn't play very good last year, but he certainly has the capability."

- JIMMIE TRAMEL, World Sports Writer

Jack Jewell, Sr., DT

After three seasons at the University of Tulsa, Jack Jewell's body of work amounts to this: He has appeared in nine games and was credited with a combined total of 11 tackles. Now a 6-foot-5, 287-pound senior, Jewell is expected to start at defensive tackle. He performed well during the spring, but can Jewell stay healthy and consistently make plays? A former Norman High School star, he returns to Norman when the Golden Hurricane visits Oklahoma on Sept. 14. It's a big assignment for such an inexperienced guy.

"During the spring, he gave me a lot of reason to be hopeful," Tulsa coach Bill Blankenship said. "But he is an unproven commodity. Frankly, he's still got a lot of work to do in summer school - the kind of work that has me sitting here, checking text messages."

Three storylines: TU football

Linebacker Shawn Jackson and safety Marco Nelson return as two of the elite defenders in Conference USA, but otherwise the Hurricane defense is almost completely rebuilt. Coaches express confidence in a cornerback rotation that should include Dwight Dobbins, Darnell Walker Jr. and Darrell Williams.

Apps of the Week: OpenTable Dines on Windows 8 and TheFind Turns Your iPad into a Shopping Fiend

This weeks apps showcase the perfect FIND and how to become a Michelangelo,?all while looking for the best?restaurant?in New York City.

iPad App of the Week: TheFind

thefind 620x452 Apps of the Week: OpenTable Dines on Windows 8 and TheFind Turns Your iPad into a Shopping Fiend

Seems like it would be difficult to improve on online shopping, but TheFind found a way.

TheFind is like a giant digital shopping mall, if your local shopping mall just had one checkout area for all the stores inside. Hundreds of stores and brands can be found on the app, and you can shop all of them, fill up one shopping cart, and pay up easily and quickly at the end. You also have the option of saving your payment info to the app, to make things even faster.

As you shop, bookmark items, and buy things on TheFind, the app will start giving you personalized recommendations when you search. That will continue to change with time and your shopping habits. I guess that would be pretty useful, what with the hundreds of stores and all. All of that info ? bookmarks, recommendations, and purchase history ? can be accessed from the app?s dashboard.

TheFind is available now on the iTunes App Store for free.

Windows Phone 8 App of the Week: Fresh Paint

You can finally become a Microsoft Paint Picasso on the go, now ? the Fresh Paint app has arrived on Windows Phone 8.

Fresh Paint was one of the more prominent new Windows 8 apps at launch, aiming to be a completely new Paint with touch devices in mind. If you haven?t seen too much of the app yet, it imitates oils and brush strokes to make you feel more like you?re in front of an easel. You can customize your colors by mixing paint like you would on a palette, making for more vibrant results than good old Microsoft Paint was ever capable of.

The Windows Phone 8 app is the same deal, just shrunk down to smartphone size. You can get it now for free on the Windows Phone Store.

New York City Restaurant Week, which is actually way closer to a month than a week, is going on from now until mid-August. That?s fine timing for OpenTable to finally arrive in app form on Windows 8.

Alright, so the PC might not be the most ideal way to use OpenTable, and if you were using a PC for OpenTable, you would probably use the browser. But, for people who are out and about with Windows 8 tablets (we know you?re out there), this one is for you. OpenTable makes it possible to get reservations quickly at restaurants all over North America.

All the goodies are there ? you can quickly see open tables at restaurants around your location, or see restaurants that you?ve recently viewed or favorited. You can browse for restaurants with the same kind of filters you?re used to with restaurant apps, or browse using a map.

All good to know, because with New York City Restaurant Week here, you?re definitely going to want to make some reservations.

Writedown is a new and beautiful, if restricted, Markdown editor for iPhone

Writedown is a newly released text editor for the iPhone and iPod touch that also has complete support for the Markdown format. Since Markdown is the preferred writing tool here on iMore, we're always keen to check out interesting looking new clients. Writedown is the project of Nguyen Vinh, and has seen some success over in Vietnam already. It looks great, and has some really nice features within that make it well worth a look, but at the same time it's pretty restricted as well.

Perhaps my favorite thing about Writedown is the pull-out Markdown crib-sheet. A simple swipe in from the right brings out a handy guide to the most common syntax that you'll need to put together a perfectly formatted Markdown document. Also of note is the cursor button, allowing you to scroll around documents with ease instead of jabbing your finger at the screen trying ? and failing ? to hit the right spot. It's beautifully designed, and won't look at all out of place in an iOS 7 world, and there's a bunch of customization features including a dark theme.

Textexpander support is also included, which makes Writedown a real production machine. Cloud syncing is taken care of via Dropbox, Google Drive or Evernote ? no iCloud ? and there's a whole heap of other apps that you can open your Writedown documents in as well as exporting to print, email and pdf.

So, a lot to like, but sadly some massively restricting areas that prevent this being the productivity tool of your dreams. Firstly, while hopefully just a bug to get worked out, if you leave the app and then come back in to carry on, the text in your document seems to magically disappear. Secondly, there doesn't seem to be an option to edit notes you've already created, again unless there's some bugs that need working out. I hope it's the latter.

Writedown has masses of potential, and some really nice features that make it worth taking a look at, but in greater amounts some frustratingly restrictive aspects. Hopefully the developer keeps up the hard work, because underneath the kinks, there's a great app waiting to get out.

Sierra Club sues feds over oil shale development

SALT LAKE CITY -

The federal government is being sued for opening up parts of the Rocky Mountains to oil shale development.

The Sierra Club and six other conservation groups filed the lawsuit Thursday in federal court in Denver.
?? ?
The groups say the U.S. Bureau of Land Management failed to consider how widespread development of public lands would harm rare desert plants and threatened species of wildlife.
?? ?
The lawsuit says the government program violates the Endangered Species Act.
?? ?
The federal government decided in November to open up parts of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming for oil shale development for legitimate efforts to squeeze oil out of hard rock.
?? ?
Other groups joining the lawsuit are Grand Canyon Trust, Living Rivers, Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, Rocky Mountain Wild, the Center for Biological Diversity and the Biodiversity Conservation Alliance.

You Need Utah Auto Insurance | Constance Reader Blog

If you have ever driven near Salt Lake City then you know how important it is to have Utah car insurance.? Drivers here are known for being particularly impatient and rude.? It traffic is flowing at a normal speed in this area then you can be diving between ten and fifteen miles per hour over the speed limit that is posted and you better plan on keeping up or enduring the heckling that will follow if you do not.? When traffic is bad and the cars are stacked up do not think that you can relax at all.? www.archibald-insurance.comYou must me alert and aware of your surroundings.? Cars and trucks will suddenly dive in front of your car if a few feet of unoccupied space open up.? At least when you are on the far side of the lanes you can ignore the shoulder right?? Wrong, vehicles have been known to use that edge as a lane to get past a few cars when other options are closed.? My advice to you is to make sure that you are aware and alert anytime you will be driving around the larger cities in Utah.? Make sure that your kids are used to driving in this environment before you sent them out on their own.? And of course you will want to make sure that everyone has full coverage from your Utah auto insurance because it will only be a matter of time living in those conditions before you will be using it.

India June car sales slide, industry seeks revival package

NEW DELHI:? India's car sales slid nine percent in June, marking a record eighth straight month of decline, data showed Friday, as the industry demanded a government package to revive the once booming sector.

Carmakers sold 139,632 cars in India last month, down from 153,450 units in the same month of 2012, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said, with slow economic growth and high borrowing costs deterring buyers.
Demand has fallen for an unprecedented eight months in a row in car market, seen as an important guide to overall economic vitality.

"The industry is facing big problems - we need a revival package from the government" that includes reductions in excise duties on cars and commercial vehicles, said SIAM director-general Vishnu Mathur.

He said there was "no way" sales will meet the three-to-five percent target that SIAM initially projected for this financial year to March 2014 but declined to set a new figure.

The downturn is in sharp contrast to the previous decade when car sales grew by 20 to 30 percent - prompting foreign automakers from Ford to Volkswagen to make a beeline for the country as they sought to boost sales globally.

Indian car sales are shrinking as China's sales in the first half of the year climbed 12.3 percent year-on-year to 10.78 million, official data showed.

"This is certainly the worst period I have seen in a long time," R.C. Bhargava, chairman of Japanese-controlled Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest carmaker, told the Economic Times in an interview published Friday.

Stuttering demand has forced automakers to introduce interest-free repayments and double-digit discounts while top vehicle firms such as Maruti and Mahindra and Mahindra have been reducing production.

Total bus and truck sales -- another important economic barometer - fell 13.45 percent to 56,197 units, SIAM said, while sales of motorcycles -- the most popular form of personal transport - fell nine percent.

A fall in India's currency to record lows against the dollar has cast doubt over hopes the central bank can cut interest rates soon to kickstart the economy which grew at a decade-low of five percent last year.

The declining rupee is already prompting manufacturers to raise car prices with material costs rising, deterring buyers further.

Domestic passenger car sales fell by 6.7 percent last year 1.89 million from a year earlier -- the first contraction for 10 years.

Mathur said one upbeat sign is that the annual monsoon rains, vital to India's food output and economic growth, have been normal which should boost rural incomes and translate into better vehicle sales.? ? AFP
