Cookbook Fun: How To Eat & Drink Like Mad Men - Happy Fun Food

(Well, maybe not drinking quite to the extent of Mad Men. That?s alcoholism.) Anyway over on GalTime, I?ve been posting food and drink recipes provided by the authors of The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook. After loading recipes for a bunch of cocktails as well as canapes, Hearts of Palm salad, Rib Eye in the Pan With Butter, Pineapple Upside-Down Cake, I was even more hungry for the Season 5 premiere of Mad Men on Sunday night.

After reviewing all these great recipes, I now want to plan a whole night of food and drink to go with the show. The new cookbook really puts into perspective how pervasive food and drink is on Mad Men.

I?ve always enjoyed comfort foods and classic cocktails so these retro recipes are right up my alley. The book includes cocktails, of course, as well as appetizers, salads, main courses and desserts. Each recipe is set up with a detailed description of the Mad Men scene in which the item appeared. I found myself caught up reading the cookbook.

The cookbook relies largely on previously published recipes from cookbooks of the 1960s. I love vintage cookbooks because the dishes, illustrations and photos provide a snapshot of a different time. I only have a few vintage cookbooks in my collection. The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook is almost like having a compendium of recipes from the best cookbooks of the 60s.

If you love Mad Men and you like to cook, you?ll enjoy this cookbook. I?m still scouring through the book to determine what I?ll whip up Sunday night. Whatever I cook will likely be accompanied by a round of Old Fashioneds. It?s one of Don Draper?s favorite drinks. I?m a big fan, too. Here?s a recipe from the new cookbook:

Don?s Old Fashioned

Authors? Note: Bourbon or rye may be used in the Old Fashioned. Rye was originally used, and The Grand Central Oyster Bar is starting to use rye again in these drinks; they use Michters?, but Don would likely choose Canadian Club, the brand we often see in his office and home. Seagrams V.O. and Crown Royal were also popular in the 1960s, says Jonathan Rogers of The Grand Central Oyster Bar.

  • 1 orange slice
  • 1 maraschino cherry
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Few drops of Angostura bitters
  • A splash of soda water to muddle ingredients
  • 2 ? ounces rye or bourbon

1. In a mixing glass, muddle orange slice, cherry, sugar, bitters and a little soda water: using a muddler, push around and break up cherry and orange until flavor is released.

2. Add soda water so cherry is wet and sugar is melted. Add bourbon or rye and serve over rocks, if desired.

Yield: 1 drink
