American Public University System Extends Online Learning Collaboration with WCET for Predictive Analytics Reporting Framework

American Public University System (APUS) today announced that it will continue its leadership role for expanded research under the Predictive Analytics Reporting Framework (PAR) project, initiated by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education?s Cooperative for Educational Technologies (WCET). Funded by a new grant and supplemented by ten additional institutions, the consortium will validate and extend the successful, ground-breaking PAR work concluded in early 2012 by six schools exploring effective uses of ?big data? predictive analytics to help improve student learning outcomes.

The Predictive Analytics Reporting (PAR) Framework helps predict risks to student retention and progression in their pursuit of a post-secondary degree or credential. The trends identified through the PAR Framework and shared through reports and risk profiles allow institutions to take steps to remove obstacles to student success and reduce problems with student retention. In his continuing role as principal investigator, APUS Vice President of Research and Development Dr. Phil Ice will oversee technical and analytical strategy for the program, which incorporates many of the best practices and award-winning predictive analytical methods for which he has been recognized by the Sloan Consortium.

The grant funds will enable the creation of a unique, collaboratively created multi-institution dataset containing more than one million anonymized student and five million course records from across 16 WCET member institutions. A dataset of this size will enable the identification of trends at the course, student, institutional and pan-institutional level.

?With 16 participating institutions sharing over one million anonymized student records, we'll be even better able to identify trends contributing to student success, program momentum, and online course completion,? said Dr. Ice. ?The cross-section of community college, four-year and online institutions, offering traditional to progressive and competency-based programs, will also help significantly advance our modeling capabilities.?

Boy discovers a bonanza in whale vomit

An 8-year-old boy in England could be up to $63,000 richer, thanks to a piece of solidified whale vomit he picked up on the beach. The chunk may look like a yellow-brownish rock, but it's actually a primo piece of ambergris, an expensive perfume ingredient that is, um, spewed out by whales.

Charlie Naysmith stumbled upon the loaf-sized lump at Hengistbury Head, on the southern coast of England, the Bournemouth Echo reported over the weekend.

As far as Charlie was concerned, it was just a seaside curiosity.?But after doing some research, he and his family determined that the curious lump could be worth somewhere between??10,000 and ?40,000 ($15,850 to $63,350).

"We have discovered it is quite rare and are waiting for some more information from marine biology experts," the boy's father, Alex, told the Echo.

Charlie is reportedly thinking about using the money to build a house for animals. But first, he and his parents might want to get that expert opinion. It turns out that the ambergris trade can get pretty sticky.

'Floating Gold'
Ambergris is a waxy, bile-like substance that builds up in the intestines of sperm whales, apparently to ease the passage of hard material such as squid beaks through a whale's digestive tract. It's often characterized as whale vomit, and although that's fine as a family-friendly description, the stuff is more widely thought to come out of the whale's back end rather than its front end.

Fresh ambergris smells like fresh whale poop, but after a long period of seasoning and hardening in the ocean, it takes on a more delicate odor. It's been variously compared to the aroma of tobacco, the scent of an old wooden church, the fragrance of seaweed, or the smell of rubbing alcohol without the pungency.

"The problem with trying to describe the smell of ambergris is that it really only smells like ambergris," Christopher Kemp, a biologist and neuroscientist who's written a book about the substance, told Bloomberg Businessweek's Eric Spitznagel.

The title of Kemp's book? "Floating Gold."

The scent of ambergris is what makes it so valuable. The substance has been used as an incense, fragrance, flavoring, remedy or aphrodisiac in many cultures, going back to ancient Egypt and China. Herman Melville devoted a whole chapter of "Moby Dick" (Chapter 92) to a discussion of ambergris and how highly prized it was in 19th-century society. "Who would think, then, that such fine ladies and gentlemen should regale themselves with an essence found in the inglorious bowels of a sick whale!" Melville wrote.

More recently, ambergris?? or ambrein, a compound extracted from ambergris?? has been used as a fixative or fragrance amplifier rather than the main ingredient in perfumes. Ambergris' selling price has been quoted at $10 to $50 per gram, depending on the quality of the specimen. (The Echo estimates that the lump found at Hengistbury Head weighs about 600 grams, which suggests that Charlie shouldn't count on building a $63,000 house for his animals.)

Underground trade
The bad news is that the trade in ambergris isn't what it used to be, in large part due to the endangered status of sperm whales. By some accounts, it's illegal to sell the stuff in many jurisdictions, including the United States. There are some traders who dispute that interpretation of anti-whaling laws, but the stigma has driven perfume companies to look for plant-based substitutes such as labdanum,?or synthetic scents such as?Ambrox. (University of British Columbia researchers reported earlier this year that a balsam-fir gene may provide a path to cheaper ambergris-like compounds.)

Maybe it's the whiff of illegality, or maybe it's just that the stuff is so expensive ? but for whatever reason, there's a clandestine character to the modern-day ambergris market. One of the subjects Kemp interviewed for his book is a full-time dealer on New Zealand's North Island, named Adrienne Beuse. Last year, she was involved in a huge ambergris deal that probably saw hundreds of thousands of dollars change hands. "It was a lot of money ? that's all I can say," one of the sellers said.

The way Beuse tells it, New Zealand's choicest hunting grounds for ambergris are ruled by a gang of aggressive collectors and traders ? a gang that doesn't shy away from violence to defend their turf.?"They're called the Beach Mafia up here," Kemp quotes Beuse as saying. "They claim a proprietary interest in the beach. They are defending, I guess in their minds, their territory. And it's worth a lot of money. If a piece worth $50,000 washes up, they don't want anyone else to find it."

It sounds as if Charlie is lucky to live in southern England rather than northern New Zealand. But he better watch his back.

Iran has doubled its underground nuclear capacity, watchdog says

VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran has doubled the number of uranium enrichment centrifuges it has in an underground bunker, a U.N. report said on Thursday, showing Tehran has continued to expand its nuclear program despite Western pressure and the threat of an Israeli attack.

As Israeli politicians increased their talk of air strikes on Iran's nuclear sites in recent months, the Islamic Republic was rapidly increasing the enrichment capacity of its Fordow site, buried deep underground to withstand any such hit.

The U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency also said in its quarterly report on Iran that buildings had been demolished and earth removed at a military site the IAEA wants to inspect, in what Western diplomats see as a determined effort by Tehran to clean up any evidence of illicit nuclear-linked tests.

These "extensive activities" at the Parchin complex, the Vienna-based U.N. agency added, would significantly hamper its investigation there, if and when inspectors are allowed access.

The building, which the IAEA believes is housing a steel chamber for explosives tests, has now been "shrouded", the report said, in a possible attempt to hide it from satellite cameras.

In another apparent sign of stonewalling of the IAEA's inquiry, it said "no concrete results" had been achieved in a series of high-profile meetings with Iran this year aimed at allaying concern about its nuclear research.

"Iran's continued enrichment activities ... serve to taunt all those in the international community concerned by Iran's nuclear program," a senior Western diplomat said.

In Washington, the White House said the United States had made it clear to Iran that it has a limited window of time to stop its nuclear activity and diplomatic terms offered by the West would not remain open indefinitely.

"We are closely studying the details of the report, but broadly speaking it is not surprising that Iran is continuing to violate its obligations," Press Secretary Jay Carney said.

The IAEA said the number of centrifuges at Fordow, near the holy Shi'ite Muslim city of Qom, about 130 km (80 miles) from the capital Tehran, had more than doubled to 2,140 from 1,064 in May. The new machines were not yet operating, it said.

Iran's supreme leader repeated this week that Iran's nuclear program was entirely peaceful. "Our motto is nuclear energy for all and nuclear weapons for none," Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told a developing nations summit in Tehran.

But the expansion in enrichment infrastructure and the stockpiles of nuclear material revealed in the IAEA's report will do nothing to ease fears or reduce the diplomatic and sanctions pressure on Iran.

PARCHIN "LANDSCAPING"

The report may strengthen a belief in Israel - which sees Iran's nuclear program as an existential threat - that the West's tougher economic sanctions against Tehran this year are failing to make the major oil producer curb its program.

"This report corroborates what (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu has been saying for years now," an Israeli official said, referring to his view that the diplomatic process had only given Iran more time to pursue its program.

Washington says there is still time for diplomatic pressure to work. It could be drawn into any Iran-Israeli conflict.

Cliff Kupchan, a Middle East analyst at consultancy Eurasia Group, said he did not think the IAEA's findings represented a "game changer" and he believed any U.S. president would attack if there was an obvious Iranian bid to build a nuclear bomb.

The IAEA said Iran had produced nearly 190 kg (418 pounds) of higher-grade enriched uranium since 2010, up from 145 kg in May, although a large part of that had been earmarked for conversion to reactor fuel. Refined uranium can have both civilian or military uses, depending on the enrichment level.

Iran says it needs the higher-grade material - which is much purer than fuel needed for electricity generation - for a medical research reactor, but it also takes it significantly closer to making potential bomb material.

Iran would need about 200-250 kg of uranium refined to 20 percent fissile concentration if it wanted to make one bomb, a decision it is not believed to have taken yet, experts say.

"Iran would not likely want to take the dramatic step of breaking out of the nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) until it has enough material for several bombs ? a point that it will not likely be able to reach for two years or more," said the Arms Control Association, a U.S. research and advocacy group.

The IAEA expressed deepening concerns about Parchin, a military site southeast of Tehran that it wants to inspect for evidence of past nuclear weapons development tests. "Significant ground scraping and landscaping have been undertaken over an extensive area at and around the location," it said.

Five buildings or other structures had been demolished and power lines, fences and paved roads removed, it said, activities that would hamper its investigation if granted access.

Iran says Parchin is a conventional military facility and has dismissed the allegations about it as "ridiculous".

VENICE ? When the Australian 3D thriller Bait went into production in the wake of Snakes on a Plane, its outlandish premise earned it the informal title in industry circles of Sharks in a Mall. Combining the horror staple of a watery feeding frenzy with the timeworn ingredients of a disaster movie, this should have been B-picture bliss. But director Kimble Rendall makes the mistake of taking a silly script too seriously, and the movie never plants its tongue firmly enough in its cheek to have much fun with the mayhem.

While it?s a vast improvement on last year?s atrocious 3D Jaws wannabe, Shark Night, and less formulaic than the recent Piranha spawn, Bait is a missed opportunity. It?s also a perplexing choice for the Venice Film Festival, where only the more auteurist end of the genre spectrum usually makes an appearance. The mythic proportions of the great white shark in Australian beach culture might have been expected to yield a more distinctive bite. But the pedestrian screenplay credited to Russell Mulcahy and John Kim shows scant specificity and little feel for character development or memorable dialogue, trudging through generic themes of love, redemption, resourcefulness and survival.

STORY: Venice 2012: The Festival Gets Underway, Showing Its Feminine Side

In the pre-titles sequence, lifeguard Josh (Xavier Samuel) is engaged to marry Tina (Sharni Vinson), the sister of his buddy Rory (Richard Brancatisano). He?s preparing to give up his idyllic life in a Gold Coast surf town to relocate with her to Singapore. Still wasted from his bachelor party the night before, Josh lets Rory paddle out in his place to check on a buoy. Chomp. Josh watches helplessly as Rory gets swallowed by one of the great whites following migrating whales up the coast. Grief and guilt cause his relationship with Tina to fall apart.

One year later, dogs are howling and birds are acting crazy, which if someone were paying attention would indicate that some major natural disaster is afoot. Disillusioned Josh has taken a job at the Oceania supermarket, where Tina wanders in to shop with her new Singaporean boyfriend Steven (Qi Yuwu).

Adhering to the classic Poseidon Adventure playbook, an assortment of characters is introduced in the calm before the storm. There?s the uptight supermarket manager (Adrian Pang) who fires store clerk Ryan (Alex Russell) when his girlfriend Jaime (Phoebe Tonkin) is caught shoplifting. The cop assigned to book her is Jaime?s exasperated dad (Martin Sacks). Downstairs in the car park, a couple of blond airheads (Lincoln Lewis, Cariba Heine) make out in their vehicle, while reluctant robber Doyle (Julian McMahon) gets ready to hold up the supermarket, urged on by skuzzy hoodlum Kirby (Dan Wyllie).

STORY: Venice 2012: Inside This Year's Sober, Streamlined, Less Glitzy Festival

Rendall handles the setup confidently, but once a freak tsunami hits the town, trapping the supermarket occupants in rising water with two angry 12-foot great whites, the action becomes disappointingly routine. While there?s a welcome touch of wackiness as Steven gets suited up in makeshift armor made out of wire shelving and shopping baskets, the body count accumulates in standard fashion. Likewise the escape plans of the dwindling survivors lack imagination. Suspense is minimal.

More than the action, however, it?s the leaden dialogue that limits involvement. Samuel brings more natural charisma and conviction than the role earns, and there?s able support notably from McMahon, Tonkin, Russell and Sacks. But the uneven actors struggle to do much with their clunky lines and one-dimensional characters.

The Australian-Singaporean co-production is generally polished and effects work is solid, including the massive animatronic sharks. But at this point, the use of 3D to unleash severed body parts in underwater carnage movies is getting a little tired.

Bait?is a mistakenly earnest effort that cries out for a few more droll touches like the growling cover of ?Mack the Knife? sung on the end credits by Rendall and The Slice.

Inspired by the success of LunaTik?, the first Kickstarter design project to raise almost $1 million in crowdfunding, Kwan decided to also use the site to launch his own take on the iPod?-as-watch product trend. His design, however, adds some new twists. Unlike the LunaTik?, PodKit Watch? isn?t worn on the wrist. It comes with two chains allowing it to be either worn on clothing and bags or as a pendant.

Indeed, Kwan hopes his design will appeal better to women, who may not wish to wear a nano wristwatch, which is somewhat ironically bulky on the wrist. All new?operating systems have a learning curve, but due to its unique blend of new and old interfaces, Windows 8?s is particularly steep. Whether it?s a menu system that forces you change screens to launch an app or a pair of dueling control panels that each contain different settings, you often have to work harder to perform the same tasks as in Windows 7. Though you can?t solve all these issues on your own ? the Start button is gone for good ? you can make the most of Windows 8 with these tips.

1. No more Start menu

Multitasking in Windows 8 is like dating Sybil. Because there's no more Start menu, users are encouraged to leave the desktop environment and go to the Modern UI Start screen, just to launch other desktop apps that take you right back to the desktop. Not only does switching screens take more time than simply launching a menu, it takes you out of context by pushing your work in the first application off-screen, making it easy to lose track of what you were doing.

Fortunately, there are several ways to avoid going through the Start screen to launch desktop apps. You can install a third-party Start menu, create keyboard shortcuts or pin applications to the taskbar.

2. Switcher Groups All Desktop Apps Into Just One Thumbnail

If?you want proof that desktop applications are second-class citizens in Windows 8, look no further than the Switcher menu where you'll find separate thumbnails for all of your open Windows 8 applications. The most blatant waste of time and muscle movement is caused by the cutesy lock screen that you must close by either dragging it offscreen or clicking on it (the faster method) every time you boot or wake your computer.

Tablet users may like to see the weather and time when their devices are inactive, but on PCs, the display is nothing more than a giant roadblock that stands between you and your login prompt.

Fortunately, you can make the lock screen disappear permanently. Just enable the "Do not display lock screen" setting in the under Computer Configuration > Administrative Tools > Control Panel > Personalization in the Local Group Policy editor.

4. The Power Button is One Gesture and Three Clicks Away

Since Microsoft designed Windows 8 with the world of always-on tablets in mind, the company thinks you'll need to shut down and restart so rarely that these functions are buried in the menu structure. In Windows 7, the Shut Down button is displayed prominently on the Start menu, whereas in Windows 8, the suggested method is to pull out the Charms menu, click the Settings charm, click the Power button and then select Shut Down from a menu.

If you don't have time and shoulder muscles to waste, you can create your own shortcuts for both the Shut Down and Restart functions. Just assign the shortcuts to the command-line commands "shutdown /s /t 0" (shutdown) and "shutdown /r /t 0" (restart), respectively. Be sure to pin these shortcuts to the Start screen and taskbar for easy access.

5. Windows Mail Doesn't Support POP Accounts

Many ISPs give users POP email accounts, but Windows 8's built-in mail app not only doesn't support POP connections, it actively disses POP users. The first time you open Windows Mail, if the program doesn't recognize your login email address as Outlook or Hotmail.com, it asks you if that address is POP, IMAP or Exchange. If you select POP, it rudely tells you that Mail doesn't support POP3 accounts and that you should get an IMAP or Exchange account instead.

You can, of course, use a different mail client, but if you want to stick with Windows Mail there's a simple solution. Set up your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Gmail account to check your POP mail and then add that account to Windows Mail. In Outlook.com, the option to send/receive mail from a POP account is listed under the More Mail Settings menu.

6. Secondary Users Cannot Install Applications

One of Windows 8's selling points is its ability to handle multiple users. However, when you add users to your Windows 8 device, by default they aren't given permission to install desktop software on their own. Though they can install Windows 8 Metro-style apps to their heart's content, secondary users are asked for an administrator's password as soon as they launch a desktop installer.

Even after an administrator enters his or her password, Windows 8 installs the program but, in our experience, fails to put a shortcut on the secondary user's desktop, on the Start screen or on the All Apps menu. The only way for the secondary user to launch his new app is to find its .exe file in the Program Files folder and create a shortcut from that. Don't try that at home.

Fortunately, it's fairly easy to grant administrative privileges to a secondary user, provided that you know which menu to use. After adding a user in the PC settings menu, go into the desktop control panel and click Manage Another Account, select the name of the new account and then click Change Account Type and select Administrator from the menu.

7. Tablet Users Need to Enter the Desktop for Key Functions

Though Microsoft focused the Modern UI on touch, it still forces users back to the desktop for such basic operations as file management and controlling the screen resolution or the user permissions (see annoyance #6). So any time a tablet user attaches a USB flash drive and wants to copy files from it, he will need to use Windows Explorer on the desktop.

Microsoft should have made all of its built-in apps ?? especially Windows Explorer and Control Panel ?? work in Modern UI, but tablet users can address this problem by making the icons on their desktop as large and finger-friendly as possible. Simply right click on the desktop, select Screen Resolution, click "Make text and other items larger or smaller" and adjust as necessary.

8. ?Bing Search App Opens Results in Another App

With its vibrant photographs of landscapes and its image-heavy tile results, Microsoft's built-in Bing Search app provides a more attractive interface for performing Web searches than you'll find elsewhere. Unfortunately, behind the attractive facade lurks a really annoying usability problem. When you see a result you like and click on it, the Bing app sends you to Internet Explorer to view the page.

Since both Bing and IE 10 run fullscreen, some users may not notice that they have switched apps, so they'll be really confused when they hit the back button in the browser, only to find out that it does not return them to the list of Bing results. To get back where they came from, users will have to switch back to the Bing app.

The easy way to avoid this problem is to pin the Bing (or Google) websites to your Start screen and use the browser, rather than the Bing app, for all your searching needs. If you feel compelled to use the dedicated Bing app, you can dock it to the right so you can see your list of results on the side of the screen while Internet Explorer takes up most of the space.

Virus detector harnesses ring of light in 'whispering gallery mode'

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? By affixing nanoscale gold spheres onto a microscopic bead of glass, researchers have created a super-sensor that can detect even single samples of the smallest known viruses. The sensor uses a peculiar behavior of light known as "whispering gallery mode," named after the famous circular gallery in St. Paul's Cathedral in London, where a whisper near the wall can be heard around the gallery.

In a similar way, waves of light are sent whirling around the inside of a small glass bead, resonating at a specific frequency. Just as a small object on a vibrating violin string can change its frequency -- ever so slightly -- so too can a virus landing on the sensor change the resonant frequency of the light. With the initial glass sphere, researchers were able to detect changes in frequency from viruses about the size of influenza, a relatively large virus.

The system, however, was not sensitive enough to detect anything smaller, such as the Polio virus. The researchers were able to increase the sensitivity of the device nearly seventyfold by adding gold nanospheres to the surface of the glass, which created what the researchers referred to as "plasmonic hot spots" -- areas where the light waves coupled with waves of electrons.

This hybrid sensor not only detected the presence of the MS2 virus -- the current light-weight in the world of RNA viruses -- it also was able to determine the weight of the virus by measuring the precise frequency change of the light.

With a few minor adjustments, the sensor should also be able to detect single proteins, such as cancer markers that appear in the blood long before outward signs of cancer can be detected. The results were published in the American Institute of Physics (AIP) journal Applied Physics Letters.

More Light (and Growth) at Second Presbyterian Church, Nashville

Second Presbyterian Church, a welcoming and affirming More Light Church in Nashville, is growing at a time when many churches in liberal and conservative denominations are in decline. According to Rev. Mary Louise McCullough, in addition to pursuing social justice, "successful liberal churches remember to take care of people?s spiritual needs." This includes meaningful worship and Bible study. ?People thought that we had veered so far from the Bible,? McCullough said about those who criticize Second's welcome of LGBT people. ?That is so far from the truth.?

Nationwide, the numbers don?t look good for the Episcopal Church and other mainline Protestant denominations, most of which tend to hold more liberal beliefs. From 2000 to 2010, most suffered double-digit percentage declines in membership, leading some to wonder if those denominations can be saved in the future.

But in Nashville, those mainline churches have showed surprising strength and have grown in membership over the past decade. That?s due in part to Nashville?s growing population. But those churches also have found success by finding ways to balance between doing good works in the world and meeting the spiritual needs of congregation members.

The Rev. Mary Louise McCullough, the new pastor at Second Presbyterian Church in Nashville, said she used to have her doubts about liberal Christianity.

At times, she said, liberal churches focused on social justice but neglected spirituality.

?What distinguishes the liberal church from the United Way, I used to wonder,? said McCullough, who became pastor at Second Presbyterian in June.

McCullough, who grew up Southern Baptist, said the successful liberal churches remember to take care of people?s spiritual needs. That includes meaningful worship services with good music and lots of Bible study.

One of her favorite Bible passages comes from the Gospel of John, where Jesus tells his followers, ?I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.?

McCullough said that her former church in Pittsburgh was often criticized for being too liberal because it, like Second Presbyterian, welcomed gays and lesbians.

?People thought that we had veered so far from the Bible,? she said. ?That is so far from the truth.?

Churches such as Second Presbyterian and St. David?s are part of a new trend among liberal or progressive churches, said religion scholar Diana Butler Bass, author of ?Christianity After Religion.? She said that starting in the 1980s, many liberal churches and theologians began to rediscover spirituality and the Bible. That makes them very different from liberal churches of the past.

?Today, you get a church that is socially liberal, that is open to gay and lesbian folk, but they are going to be studying the Bible and in prayer groups,? she said.

Bass also points out it?s not just liberal churches that have declined in recent years. Conservative denominations such as the Southern Baptist Convention and the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church also have declined.
