auto insurance required when buy new car?
I live in california and recently went to the dealer bought a new car, and the saleman told me that I need to buy the insurance for my new car right at the dealer otherwise he can not let me drive that car home from the dealer eventhough I have full insurance coverage on my old car(current car)? He ask me to get the insurance coverage that they offer for 30 days? Is this right or it is a scam to get more money from me? Is it true that for everyone who buy new car to get the insurace coverage before they can drive it home even if you have full coverage insrurace on your old car?

It is true that everyone is required to have insurance on the new car before it is driven home, but most people just contact their OWN insurance company and tell them to add the new vehicle..I think the part about you buying insurance from that dealer sounds like a scam, nobody does that because they never get the lowest rates possible?Call the company you already use for your current car and ask for quotes?Best wishes..:)

He is lying to you. If you have insurance on your current car your carrier will cover the new one and you have 10 days to change it to the new car (even if it is not full coverage). I have always driven my new car home from the lot without calling my insurance company or buying any insurance from a car company. The dealer asks for your current insurance card, makes a copy and everything is good to go.

Sounds right about not being able to take the car off the lot without it but never heard of getting insurance at the dealer's before.

call your insurance agent, i dont know anyone who has ever had to go thru the dealer for ins. you may be able to transfer you old ins. to your new car or have to make some financial adjustments but no, not from the dealer. call your guy!
