Lions and tigers shot in Ohio; owner freed them

ZANESVILLE, Ohio (AP) ? Animal rights advocates say there was little police could do to save dozens of exotic animals set free from a privately-owned preserve before the owner committed suicide.

Terry Thompson opened the animals' cages at his Muskingum County Animal Farm near Zanesville Tuesday evening and then killed himself.

Lions, tigers, bears and other animals began scattering and police opened fire. Eventually about 48 were killed.

Animal advocates say the creatures were a danger to humans, although some people said they should have been saved.

The Humane Society of the United States has criticized Ohio Gov. John Kasich for allowing a statewide ban on the buying and selling of exotic pets to expire in April. They urged him to enact emergency rules until the state comes up with a permanent legal solution.
