Kitchen cabinets over the years can take some real abuse, especially if a family has been raised in the house. There are times that it becomes obvious that the kitchen cupboards need some serious attention. These are also often the times when the family finances refuse to allow any serious attention to the kitchen cabinets. Painting the cabinets may well be a viable solution. The savings compared to replacing or even remodeling the cabinets is virtually incredible. If the homeowner is a DIY inclined the savings can even be more.

In today?s market the cost of replacing the cabinetry in even a small kitchen can easily creep up into the $5000 range, that?s minus installation or new countertops. Worse yet the newly purchased cabinets may lack the quality of those that are being replaced. Taking a step backwards was not on the remodeling agenda. Re-facing the existing cabinets and drawers, the process of veneering, can reach upwards of $3500 alone. Now all the painting and prep materials, like sandpaper, primer, paint and brushes will run the homeowner in the neighborhood of $200 to $250. Those are beyond incredible savings. If the services of a professional painter are sought out another $1000 can be added to the cost. A little work on the part of the homeowner saves thousands of dollars.

Note that even painting the kitchen cabinets cannot help much if there is a poor kitchen design or structural flaws in the cabinetry itself. Low cost cabinetry in the first place tends to deteriorate over time, it loses some of its structural integrity and no amount of paint can fix that. Thin sides and back on older cabinets are usually veneered with a vinyl paper. This vinyl paper can and will peel over time. Painting over it is not really an option and peeling it off is not much better. If the kitchen cabinets happened to be manufactured out of particle board and surfaced with a veneer of any sort then no amount of painting will bring them back to life.

When there are true structural problems like cracking, or loose railings and hardware that defy reattaching then replacing the cabinetry altogether may well be the only option. If the damage consists of only minor little scratches or nicks then painting can be the way to go. In addition to the fresh coat on the cabinetry brand new hardware like hinges, latches, handles and knobs, can really offer a new fresh look.
