Thinking Of Installing Solar Energy Panels? Here's What You Should ...

As a promising source of energy, solar energy has been hanging on the fringe for decades. The limitations that have prevented many from installing solar energy panels in homes and businesses still haven?t gone totally away, but there are still a lot of undeniable benefits. Going totally solar is a very attractive concept but taking a hard look at the pros and cons of solar power systems gives you the information you need to see whether the benefits of a solar system for you is worth it.

Pros:

- Solar energy installation can totally eliminate your power bill.

- Switching over to electric heat from gas or oil can totally eliminate your heating and cooling bills.

- All electric and hybrid vehicles can charge off the solar power grid virtually eliminating fuel costs.

- Excess energy produced by solar panels can be sold to the power company to create an income stream.

- After the initial investment, solar energy has low maintenance costs and is fairly easy to maintain.

- On the whole, solar energy is ecologically friendly and may be the biggest way to have an impact on our environment

Cons:

- Any way you look at it, the initial investment to installing solar energy panels is substantial. Building a system capable of eliminating your power bill costs at least $20,000 or more depending on your power needs.

- While solar energy panels can pay for itself and even generate money, it could take years or even decades to do so.

- Solar power is only as effective as the amount of sunlight received. If you live in an area that is consistently cloudy or the location is in a wooded area where sunlight doesn?t penetrate, then the panels may not be effective at all.

- There is an associated expense since you will need storage batteries to hold the energy until it is needed. These batteries do have to be replaced from time to time (approximately every 5 years) which adds to maintenance expenses.

- An associated problem with these batteries is the fact that manufacturing and disposing of them is very unfriendly to the environment.

Solar panel energy has the potential to give us the ability to totally eliminate our need for any type of fossil fuel. Between electric vehicles and solar energy, we can eliminate our need for gasoline, for kerosene, home heating fuel, natural gas and even coal. Not only will installing solar energy panels eliminate a wide variety of ecologically destructive processes we currently use today, but it gives us a source for cheap, unlimited energy. However the expense and the need for batteries that are ecologically damaging are two drawbacks that make installing solar energy panels still problematic. However, with the obvious benefits that solar power promises and with huge improvements being made in battery technology, solar energy will be the wave of the future.
